This week’s OUT OF THE ARCHIVES features two postcards sent to Dr. Alfred D. Henkel from his younger sister, Julia Henkel. Dr. Henkel had six sisters, and they all wrote regularly to him for their whole lives.
The first postcard is a color hand-tinted photo of New Market, Virginia, sent May 19, 1923. Julia lived in New Market her whole life.
The second postcard, sent March 12, 1946, was sold as a PERSONAL POSTCARD. Indeed, her name and city are printed in soothing blue ink: “Mrs. Julia K. Henkel” and “New Market, Virginia”. The illustration of a cabin under a tall tree adds a whimsical touch.
Compare the handwriting between the two postcards. Also, note the addresses used for Dr. Henkel: the 1923 postcard is addressed to 29. S. Market, and the 1946 postcard is addressed to 29 S. Cameron. Dr. Henkel hadn’t moved; both names refer to the same street.
