Nalani was nominated to speak at today’s Laurel Ridge event and although she was not chosen I want to share her speech because it’s pretty awesome!

For the last 12 years, I have shared a flight with my classmates. Soon we will have to depart from each other and take our own adventures. Everyone will venture out and find their purpose in life. As I've gotten older I've noticed that life is a lot like the airport. Some are on a specific quest and some are venturing aimlessly, this too is very similar to traveling through life. I have chosen a specific destination and have chosen the field of Cardiovascular Sonography. To get there I will need to start by completing my Associates Degree at Laurel Ridge. Might I add that because of this dual enrollment program tomorrow I will stand here for Commencement with a Certificate in Health Sciences. From there I will enroll in a program specialized in Cardiovascular Sonography. My path hasn't always been clear but my vision has always been there and that is to find a career to help others and travel. My life experiences and specific opportunities have clarified where and how to become a Travel Cardiovascular Sonographer.
I have had the privilege of traveling the world starting at a young age. My first vacation was when I was one month old. From there my parents have taken me to a variety of places. I have traveled to many states and other countries. I have experienced very different settings, varying from rich parts of countries to very poor parts. One of the most touching experiences have been my trips to El Salvador. El Salvador is my dad’s home country so I have been there several times growing up. El Salvador is a very beautiful place but there are many dangerous parts and there are very poor parts. My parents always took us to the poor parts so that we can see the different ways people live. This experience has humbled me a lot and allowed me to be more grateful for everything that my parents have provided me with. These experiences have not only opened my eyes but have guided my future academic goals which involve serving those of various socioeconomic status.
I want to encourage all of you to dream big. To persist. To break every barrier and every roadblock. To remember that life may take you in many different directions but you are ultimately in control of your destination. Even when you fly off in unknown territory or unfamiliar lands remember your goal. Remember your dream. And prepare yourself for the next part of your journey.
