Oxendine began performing because of her mother, who owned and operated a performing arts school in Washington DC. She grew up meeting or working with people like George and Ira Gershwin, Gregory Hines, Savion Glover, Leontyne Price and Oprah. Born in Rocky Mount, NC but raised just outside of DC, she was on stage for her first solo dance performance at the age of three and made her singing debut at the age of four with a solo at Tarrytown Mall.
Most of her performing arts experience has been the equivalent to being a studio musician. Whatever was needed for the performing arts school, she would fill in. Whether it be working off-stage as a stage director, as an MC for various talent competitions or voice-overs in New York, a dressing room attendant, helping with set design, “prepping” (read babysitting) acts and their entourages for Showtime at the Apollo, or whatever else was needed.
Her most cherished experiences were singing back-up for musicians like Marc Cary and No Question, jamming with James Brown and the New JCs and performing on stage with her dance partner at the Kennedy Center.
This is Ms. Oxendine’s debut performance with Visions Community Theater. She is thrilled to be part of this educational and entertaining production and thanks the directors and the cast for this opportunity.
