As we did see a little rain this weekend, this is a reminder Van Zandt County is still under a burn ban. Please refrain from any outdoor burning until the burn ban is lifted.

WILDFIRE INCIDENT UPDATE – HWY 64 / COUNTY ROAD 3412
At approximately 2:23 PM on Thursday, August 27, Wills Point Fire Department was dispatched to a reported grass fire in the area of HWY 64 and County Road 3412.
At the time of the call, WPFD and several surrounding departments were clearing another fire incident on the north side of our district. Upon arrival, responding units encountered heavy smoke, heavy fuel conditions, and a rapidly moving fire. Additional mutual aid was immediately requested from surrounding fire departments, along with assistance from the Texas A&M Forest Service.
An Incident Command Post was established on the northwest side of the incident, bringing Fire and Law Enforcement together to coordinate operations.
Just before sunrise Friday morning, the Texas A&M Forest Service reported the fire was 100% contained, with approximately 659 acres burned.
As of 1:00 PM Friday, the Texas A&M Forest Service remained on scene monitoring the area and addressing any remaining hot spots.
During the incident, multiple firefighters were transported to a local emergency room for heat-related issues. Those firefighters have either been released or are expected to be released.
We want to extend a special thank you to all of the mutual aid fire departments and firefighters, law enforcement officers, dispatchers, and other agencies who worked tirelessly throughout this incident. The cooperation and coordination between Fire and Law Enforcement played a major role in bringing this large and fast-moving fire under control as quickly and safely as possible. Incidents like this demonstrate just how important the relationships between our neighboring agencies truly are.
We also want to give a heartfelt thank you to the communities we all serve. The prayers, food and drink donations, phone calls, messages, and countless offers of support throughout this incident were greatly appreciated by everyone working the fire.
Thank you for standing behind your first responders and supporting all of the agencies that worked together during this incident.

Members of the Wills Point Fire Department participated in air consumption and hose navigation safety training last night while blacked out to simulate the zero-visibility conditions firefighters may encounter inside a structure fire.
Have you ever wondered how firefighters find their way through a building when thick smoke completely blocks their vision?
The fire hose isn’t just used to put water on the fire — it also serves as a lifeline back to safety. By feeling the hose and its couplings, firefighters can determine which direction leads them back out.
A simple phrase helps them remember:
“Smooth, bump-bump, to the pump.”
Training like this helps our firefighters practice navigating in zero visibility, controlling their breathing, monitoring air consumption, and staying calm under stressful conditions.

As our area continues to experience dry conditions, the risk of grass and brush fires remains high. The ground and vegetation are extremely dry, allowing fires to spread rapidly.
If you are burning, welding, using equipment that creates sparks, or doing any activity that could start a fire, be prepared to extinguish it immediately. Have a water source, fire extinguisher, or other firefighting equipment readily available before you begin.
If a fire gets out of control, call 911 immediately. Be prepared to provide your exact location and clear instructions on how emergency responders can access the fire.
Your Wills Point Firefighters had a busy evening responding to multiple incidents yesterday and into the night. We would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Edgewood Fire Department and Elmo Fire Department for their mutual aid assistance. We appreciate the teamwork and support that helps keep our communities safe.
Please stay alert, use caution, and help us prevent unnecessary fires.
