Our climate here in Chicago is an extreme one. We often get days over 100° in the summer and in winter we can get down to -20° or more. That kind of weather is not conducive to large multi sliding doors like you see in Arizona or California. When we install them there should be a step down at the threshold to relocate leaking from driving rain and drifting snow that can melt against the door panel. Flush applications in our climate zone (climate zone 5) are a bad idea, even if there is a large covered area outside of the door. In our 25+ years of building we’ve seen many examples of why flush patios fail at one point or another.

Instagram is full of photos of beautiful homes, kitchens, back patios, architectural details, and so on. But as Builders there are details behind the walls that we find equally as beautiful. We see not only the outer beauty but the form, function and craftsmanship that goes into those details. The inner beauty. The thought that goes into designing something that serves a purpose. It’s almost a shame to cover them up with drywall or plaster!
In this photo we have an LVL ceiling joist that carries a roof load but it doesn’t sit on the wall because of a clipped ceiling (dropped wall plate). To tie it in and make it suitable to carry the load it needed to sandwiched and bolted to an LVL roof rafter. The carpenter executed this detail neatly and precisely.
It’s beautiful (says the builder). I know, I’m a nerd. But a builder nerd.
