Keagan and I struggled with late season birds earlier in the morning but was able to make an old school sneak attack on this 3 bearded magnum! Another successful grip n’ grin for the 2025 Spring turkey season!

Bird 15 was a wet one!! I have hunted Jerry’s Aunt and Uncle’s place for 10 plus years now. This year Jerry approached me asking if I could help him in harvesting a turkey on his relatives property. We had numerous conversations about turkey habitat, characteristics, as well as different hunting techniques. I have always appreciated Jerry’s aunt and uncle for allowing me to hunt on their property and I appreciate Jerry for the camaraderie this season and for allowing me to pass on what knowledge I know about the great wild turkey!!!

I love a big ole spurred gobbler!!! This dude made us work for him. Sam and I had to get creative with our approach on both these lonely toms. We made one set and had them called in to about 30 yards but they were on the neighboring property. We were definitely caught with our hands tied. We had the strutter decoy at the base of the tree with us and had only one option and that was to show the two toms the decoy. Knowing that if we hadn’t of they would have gotten to the fence and would have most likely spooked. So regrettably, I tossed the decoy up hoping that they would get mad and cross the fence and not spook. They however did not like the stutter decoy and made a hard turn up and over the ridge. Fast forward 30 min, Sam and I made set number 2 but this time with no decoy… my favorite way to kill em! Gobbling birds in the timber with no decoy! We snuck around the ridge and struck the two of them again. Found us a good tree to lean up against and had this 1 3/8” spurred big boy in our laps within 5 min!

Tuesday morning success with Grandpa! Calling gobbling birds through the timber will always be my favorite way to hunt these elusive birds!

Just when we thought opening day couldn’t have gotten any better… Tori called me yesterday afternoon while I was at work around 4:45. Said she had spotted a strutter in one of the fields we have permission to hunt on. I eagerly left work at 5 o’clock, rushed home to change and met up with my good ole pal Turner. All three of us slipped into the field about 5:30 and made the slow and steady stalk on this big double bearded bird! By 5:52 he was within 25 yards doing his thing!!! Tori let the trusty 20 GA do the rest!
