Your plumber says your dripping shower needs a new cartridge and it'll cost a couple hundred bucks. Meanwhile, you were assuming you just needed a 50-cent rubber washer.

What the heck is the difference?

Washer: Rubber washers are used in older 2-handle or 3-handle showers. The washer is just one tiny piece attached to a long metal rod (called a stem). The rod turns to press the washer flat against the inside of the valve to block the water. Replacing just the washer rarely fixes the drip because the metal seat inside the valve is usually worn out too.

Cartridge: A cartridge is a single plastic-and-metal unit used in modern single-handle showers. Instead of separate handles for hot and cold, one cartridge does it all—it controls temperature, regulates flow, and shuts the water off. They don't use old-school washers; all the seals are built directly inside the unit. When it drips, you have to swap out the whole cartridge.
