Recently, I was called to remove a large wheelchair ramp in a customer's garage and build a proper landing with steps in it's place. It was requested that I use as much of the old wood as possible to keep cost down (we all know the high price of lumber right now). I did just that.
About a week later, I messaged the customer to check if they were still satisfied with the completed project, as I usually do for my customers. Indeed, there was an issue. Some of the old wood I reused had split at two critical areas. Either it was just the old wood or maybe, just maybe, I didn't pre-drill like I should have in these spots. I own the company AND I own my mistakes.
I bought some new lumber, replaced the bad boards and shored up the critical areas with strong ties. All at no cost to the customer, since she had already payed for the service that I was finally able to give. I will definitely pre-drill the next time!
