Reading the Bulletin: What Category Does Roofing Fall In? | GC Exam Live Class

Somebody asked me how worried they should be about roofing questions. Fair question. Wrong way to ask it.

The right way is: pull the bulletin, find which category roofing falls under, and see how many questions that category is worth.

Open book does not mean easy. It means you have three minutes to find something in a book you did not write.

Roofing Book Basics: Underlayment, Drip Edge and Nail Spacing | GC Exam Live Class

Two houses, same street, same roof, same year. A tropical storm comes through with 70 mile an hour gusts. One drip edge is flapping and water is running behind the fascia. The other one does not move.

The difference was nail spacing. Six inches instead of ten.

Vertical Front Wall Flashing: How Far Up the Wall? | GC Exam Live Class

"Vertical front wall flashing should extend up the wall a minimum of blank inches." Three, four, five or six?

I worked this one live with the class and I got it wrong. On camera. Then we went back and found out exactly why.

What's in it:
• Pulling the keywords out first — flashing is the main one, vertical and wall are the supporting ones
• What happens when the index gives you three page numbers and you pick the wrong one to open first
• Reading the figure instead of the paragraph, and why the number you want is sometimes only in the drawing
• Why the answer being "right" in the book and "right" on the exam are two different arguments

The reason I left my wrong answer in is that this is the part nobody shows you. Everybody posts the clean version where they knew it cold. That is not what the exam feels like.

Naming Your Business: Trademark, Service Mark and the Trick in the Question

"Blank is relatively unimportant when naming a business." Impression of the firm? Trademark? Service? Location?
