TLDR: My painting of a boombox is also a bluetooth speaker that you can pair to your phone and play music from. I had been tinkering with this one for a while. Took some code, a soldering iron, and a whole bunch of interneting to pull it together. The amp is a speaker bonnet from sitting on top of a Raspberry Pi 3. Everything’s mounted to the frame with some cool products from . I cobbled together bits of code from open sources across the internet and noodled around until it did what I needed it to do.

I’ve been sitting on this painting for a minute. Finished it early 2025 but never got around to sharing it. Funny thing is, I always gets the biggest smiles and best conversations whenever someone sees it in person. So without any further pomp and circumstance, I present ā€œRouletteā€ for your enjoyment.

This one’s cool because when you use the LizardkngARt app, the painting and prints come alive on your phone. I created the animation in homage to one of the best original NES games. Make sure your sound is on, it’ll transport you back to sitting on the floor, sweaty controller in hand, getting the timing just right to line up the star. Same nostalgia, new tech.

The original is available, but I’m also excited to share that prints are now live on my new online store, check the link in my bio

In, out. Repeat. Somewhere between those two points there’s a space where the noise stops, where you remember that underneath everything, there’s a rhythm that’s been with you since day one. Your breath. The one constant you’ve had your entire life, and the thing we often pay the least attention to.

ā€˜Resonance’ is my attempt to make that visible. On the surface it’s a painting of a woman, eyes closed, lost in that space between breaths. Using augmented reality with my LizardkngARt app, an expanding shape appears above her head, dilating and contracting, breathing with her. The idea is simple: you breathe along with her. Sync up. Let the painting guide you into that rhythm. It’s a meditation trainer disguised as art, a portal to that quiet place we all need but rarely remember.

Nostalgia isn’t just a cozy memory of days long past, it can be a place you can return to. A sanctuary.

Back a few years ago I had been thinking about the spaces that helped shape me. Not the physical rooms I grew up in, but the ones that lived inside the cathode ray tubes. Saturday mornings in front of the TV with a bowl of cereal, the world still asleep, and I’m watching He-Man defend Castle Grayskull or the Turtles skateboard under the streets of New York City. They were sanctuaries for the heroes, and they became sanctuaries for me as well.

That’s what led me to paint the Saturday Morning Sanctuaries, a series of iconic hideouts from the cartoons that raised me. Castle Grayskull. Scrooges Vault. The Turtles Sewer Hideout. The Muppet Babies Nursery. The Thundercats Lair. Each one is a place of power, rest, and refuge for its heroes. But here’s the thing: the characters are gone. The voice actors have moved on, the animators too. These sanctuaries are ours now. Ā In a modern world where everything had accelerated so much, it was a way for me to return to a safe space to collect myself and find resolve to tackle whatever this new decade tossed my way.

I’ve been playing with augmented reality for a while now, giving my traditional art an extra layer of motion and sound. A third party app was powering all of this, linking the video to the canvas. As my audience started to grow so did my concerns. If this company shut down, all my art would ā€˜stop working’. I had qualms about accepting bigger commissions and even selling prints. That’s not even to mention the $20 subscription I was paying each month to host and run my content through their app. I knew if I wanted my practice to level up, I’d have to figure something out.

I might catch some heat for this one, but I’m not wrong: Sublime is a cover band. Though I may be stretching the term a little. Not every track is a straight-up cover, but if you soften your focus like you’re peering into a magic eye photo, what emerges is a kaleidoscopic mixtape. A big salty collage of borrowed riffs and lifted lines. Ā Sublime’s music is a rabbit hole… one that runs from Long Beach to Compton to Kingston and beyond. This playlist is an epic quest through all the songs that made the songs.

As I kick off this bi-weekly newsletter, my mind has been on momentum. How to gain some, how to sustain it, and how to catch it again when it decides to run off without me.

In his book Catching the Big Fish, David Lynch says: ā€œIf you want to get one hour of good painting in, you have to have four hours of uninterrupted time.ā€ I’ve lived that.

Sometimes it takes hours just to break the seal, and the moment the clock gets interrupted, it all resets. I’ve sat in the studio staring down a canvas, trying to force the work into existence.

I was raised on montage sequences. 80’s movies taught me that the grind collapses into a series of neat little cuts with an epic soundtrack, music swelling until you emerge victorious. Sit down at the desk, and the edit kicks in. Except it doesn’t. There’s no cut. No music. Just me, the silence, and the slow grind of the first inch.
