Congratulations to Satheesh Muppavarapu, MD, on his retirement after 26 dedicated years at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital.

Dr. Muppa became an orthopaedic surgeon in 1982 before transitioning to physical medicine and rehabilitation, earning board certification in 2002. He served as an assistant professor for 20 years, and joined Marianjoy in July 2000, where he cared for patients in the inpatient program, and continued in his role when Marianjoy joined Northwestern Medicine in 2016. Over the span of his career, he’s worked with a variety of healthcare systems and hospitals, exemplifying our patients-first mission.

Thank you, Dr. Muppa, for your compassion, dedication and lasting commitment to the patients and families you’ve served. We wish you all the best in retirement!

For National Rehabilitation Awareness Week, we’re celebrating the heart behind rehab care — our incredible team. As part of the week, staff were invited to share why they love working in rehab by writing their reflections on paper hearts and adding them to a special tree on display outside the cafeteria.

Residents in our advanced residency program receive comprehensive inpatient, outpatient, and procedural training.

Northwestern Medicine Aphasia Center at Marianjoy is hosting our Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Program this fall.

Designed to help people with aphasia strengthen their communication skills, this specialized program provides intensive services tailored to each patient’s goals and needs. Participants will get support from experienced professionals and work on meaningful communication strategies in a structured, encouraging environment.

The program also focuses on helping patients and families navigate the emotional and practical impact of aphasia, because recovery is about more than words: It’s about connection, independence and a better quality of life.

More than 1 in 4 older adults experience a fall every year. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls are the leading cause of injury in individuals aged 65 and older.

Sylvia A. Duraski, APRN, has been appointed president of the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses (ARN) for 2026-2027.

ARN promotes rehabilitation nursing practice through professional development opportunities, advocacy and collaboration, with a mission to enhance quality of life for individuals with disabilities or chronic illness.

The therapists at Marianjoy coordinated a back-to-school drive to support local students through the People’s Resource Center in Wheaton.

The project was part of the Illinois Physical Therapy Association’s 75 Acts of Service. Our occupational, physical and speech-language therapists collected folders, notebooks, crayons, markers, glue sticks, backpacks and many other essentials to help DuPage County students start the school year prepared.
