On February 6, Angela’s life changed in an instant. While walking the track, something she did often, she suddenly grew dizzy and disoriented. The next thing she remembers is being in her car with a severe headache, calling her husband to come get her. She was having a stroke.

After three days at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital, Angela began intensive rehab at Marianjoy, including physical, occupational and speech therapy to regain function, mobility and independence with the goal of returning home.

Nearly three weeks later, she did just that, and today she continues outpatient therapy at Marianjoy to improve her short-term memory, problem-solving, eye movements and upper body strength.

“I arrived at Marianjoy not knowing what had happened to me. Thanks to all the kind, dedicated staff at Marianjoy, I’m gaining confidence, peace of mind, and I’m smiling again. I’m making it my mission to educate others on the warning signs of a stroke — and how getting help fast can make all the difference.”

Aphasia affects language, not intelligence.

Someone with aphasia knows what they want to say but has difficulty finding the words to say it. Aphasia is a condition that affects a person’s ability to communicate. It can also impact a person’s ability to understand language, read and/or write.

The Northwestern Medicine Aphasia Center at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital offers group and individual services to people living with aphasia. The Aphasia Center connects people with aphasia living in the community with one another for support and ongoing communication practice.

Rehabilitation focuses on helping people perform repeated motions and everyday activities. Taken together, this helps people gain independence and strength.

As a leading rehabilitation facility, we’ve got a lot of tools to support patients as they work on movement skills. This device is one of them. It helps patients safely practice walking, balance, standing up and stairs, all while supported in a secure harness.

Speech therapy is about so much more than just words.

While speech-language pathologists help people improve communication, they also support essential skills like eating and swallowing, understanding and expressing thoughts, paying attention and problem-solving.

As we celebrate Better Speech and Hearing Month, we want to extend a heartfelt thank-you to our incredible speech therapists. Your dedication to improving quality of life — for patients of all ages, from children to older adults — is truly inspiring.

Thank you for all that you do!

A heartfelt thank you to our incredible Team NM volunteers!

This past weekend at the GoBabyGo event at Marianjoy, your kindness and dedication helped create unforgettable moments for 21 children with disabilities. Thanks to you, each ride on toy car was carefully customized with switches, large buttons and other accessibility features.

Seeing the smiles on those little faces as the kids experienced the joy of independently driving and playing — many for the first time on toys like these — was truly inspiring.

We’re proud to support events like this, and we’re even prouder of the volunteers who help make them possible.

Drivers work with a team of occupational therapists, who are certified driver rehabilitation specialists and certified driving instructors in a two-part evaluation procedure to assess driving readiness safety. A specialist may will then provide recommendations based on the evaluation results.
