May Saint of the Month: Frances Perkins (1880-1965) was a science teacher who became the longest-serving cabinet member in U.S. history. But she was also a strategic negotiator and visionary policy architect.

Key leadership insights from her life:
• Principled Negotiation: When FDR offered her the Secretary of Labor position, she brought a comprehensive list of demands including Social Security, minimum wage laws, and child labor bans - and got him to agree to all of them
• Faith-Driven Purpose: Her monthly retreats to a convent weren't escape from work but preparation for it: "Christians must regard entrance into politics and political activity as a major basic Christian duty"
• Breaking Barriers Responsibly: She accepted the cabinet position knowing "The door might not be opened to another woman for a long, long time" and had "a kind of duty to other women"
• Holistic Leadership: She understood that effective leadership required both policy expertise and spiritual grounding

Sometimes the most effective leaders are those who see their work as service to something greater than career advancement.

Worship together at Trinity Episcopal in Wheaton: Saturdays at 5pm, Sundays at 8am & 10am and Wednesdays at 10:00am

An excerpt from one of this weekend’s scripture reading: (Acts 2: 1-21) When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
