GRWA is happy to have served as part of the design construction administration team reimagining and updating one of the most widely recognized street-level places on the Naperville Riverwalk. We are honored to have worked with Engineering Resource Associates, all of the talented and dedicated members of the Riverwalk Commission, Naperville Park District, and the engaged citizens of Naperville to dramatically transform this public space that will be enjoyed by generations to come. The new design surrounding the iconic Landforms Sculpture was driven by increased accessibility while also meeting all other objectives and standards outlined in the 2031 Naperville Riverwalk Master Plan.

Lake County Stormwater Management Commission and the Illinois Soil Classifers Associations (ISCA) hosted 50 natural resource professionals at a Hydric Soils for Wetland Delineation Course in Libertyville. GRWA team members who attended were reinforced in the fact that dirt don’t hurt! 🌱🪏

Ellen Raimondi Schwartz, Senior Ecologist at GRWA, celebrated the last day of American Wetlands Month with a guided walk through the Volo Bog. The hike started with a talk about the history of the bog and the ecological, economic, and social benefits of this important Illinois wetland. The Volo Bog State Natural Area is home to the only open-water quaking bog in Illinois. Formed in an ancient glacial kettle hole lake, Volo Bog was dedicated as the 25th Illinois Nature Preserve in June, 1970. As the southernmost open water quaking bog in North America to exhibit all stages of bog succession, Volo Bog was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1972. It was a perfect day to recognize American Wetlands Month by walking the floating boardwalk, learning about all the vegetational stages that make up the bog, and appreciating the natural resources that have been protected in Illinois. Thank you Ellen for organizing the group and raising awareness about the vital role wetlands play in the environment!

World Wetland Day is celebrated on February 2nd each year. It is significant to recognize wetlands’ critical role for the planet and human well-being. This holiday raises awareness about the vital need to protect and restore these ecosystems. We honored World Wetland Day this year with a presentation from Ellen Raimondi, GRWA’s Senior Natural Resource Consultant. Ellen did an excellent job explaining wetlands and their impact on landscape architecture.
