Five years ago, Mary* was pregnant, unemployed, caring for an 18 month old daughter, and searching for help during one of the most difficult times in her life.

Through Family Tree, she found support, understanding, and the strength to build a safer future for herself and her children.

Today, Mary and her daughters are "safe, healthy, HAPPY!"

For someone experiencing domestic violence, homelessness, child abuse, or isolation, knowing there's one person who believes them can make all the difference.

This International Day of Friendship, we're celebrating the people who listen without judgment, offer encouragement, and remind others they don't have to face life's challenges alone.

Strong friendships help build stronger families and stronger communities!

Did you know one-quarter of all unhoused children have witnessed domestic violence? Child abuse, domestic violence, and homelessness are deeply interconnected. Families experiencing one of these challenges are often facing others as well.

When Family Tree opened Denver's first women's shelter in 1976, we quickly realized that emergency shelter alone wasn't enough. That's why we chose to "look upriver," addressing the root causes of these issues before families reach a crisis.

Today, we're working every day to prevent and overcome child abuse, domestic violence, and homelessness, helping build safer, stronger communities.

Did you know?

Roots of Courage was originally called Women in Crisis.

In 1984, construction began on a new, expanded shelter to better serve survivors. But just two weeks before its grand opening in 1986, an arsonist destroyed the building.

What happened next is a testament to the strength of this community. Support poured in from donors, volunteers, and community members, making it possible to raise the funds needed to rebuild. In December 1988, a new shelter opened its doors—ensuring survivors continued to have a safe place to turn.

For 50 years, Family Tree has been strengthened by a community that refuses to let hope be extinguished. 💚

From everyday essentials to personal care items, in-kind donations help us meet immediate needs and support children, families, and individuals as they work toward safety and stability.

NextGen is a unique opportunity to connect with other passionate community members while learning about nonprofit leadership, philanthropy, and the impact of Family Tree's work. Over nine months, cohort members participate in monthly learning sessions, volunteer projects, social gatherings, and hands-on opportunities to support our mission.

Some of Family Tree's biggest champions have shown their support in unexpected ways.

For many years, Jazzercisers from across Colorado collected pledges and took to the field during Denver Broncos halftime shows, raising funds through the Denver Broncos Charities Fund to benefit local nonprofits, including Family Tree.

One event alone raised more than $110,000, with $92,000 awarded to Family Tree to support our shelters and services!

As we celebrate our 50th anniversary, we're honored to reflect on the community partnerships that have strengthened our mission for decades.

Congratulations, QuikTrip!

Family Tree was honored to be part of the grand opening celebration of the new QuikTrip location at Alameda and Crystal in Aurora. As part of their commitment to the community, QuikTrip recently made a generous donation to support Family Tree’s three shelters, including GOALS in Aurora. They also served as an Achievement Sponsor for our Celebration of Achievement event this past May.
