Oral habits like pacifier use, thumb sucking, or prolonged use of bottles beyond infancy can lead to negative consequences for oral and facial development, as well as potential airway issues. Here’s how:

DENTAL ISSUES: Prolonged sucking on a pacifier, thumb, or fingers can lead to dental problems such as misalignment of teeth (malocclusion), open bite, or overbite. The pressure exerted by sucking can cause the teeth to be pushed out of their normal position, leading to improper alignment.

SPEECH DEVELOPMENT: Chronic pacifier use or thumb sucking can affect speech development, particularly if it persists beyond the age when speech development is crucial. It may lead to issues with articulation and pronunciation, as well as problems with tongue placement.

JAW DEVELOPMENT: Sucking on a pacifier or thumb can also affect the development of the jaw. Prolonged sucking can influence the growth of the jawbone, leading to an incorrect relationship between the upper and lower jaws, which can contribute to malocclusion and other orthodontic problems.

AIRWAY ISSUES: One of the less commonly discussed consequences of prolonged oral habits is their potential impact on airway development. Continuous sucking can affect the positioning of the tongue and the muscles of the mouth and throat, potentially contributing to issues like mouth breathing or obstructive sleep apnea. These habits may lead to narrower airways, which can result in breathing difficulties, especially during sleep.

It’s essential for parents and caregivers to STOP using a pacifier with their children by 6 MONTHS OF AGE. Dr. Ngo can provide guidance and support for parents in helping children break these habits. Early intervention is key to minimizing the potential negative effects on oral and facial development, as well as overall health and well-being!
