Construction Update
The original brownstone foundation of the Silas Deane House is visible again—and we discovered something unexpected.
In moving the steps, we found some details which had long been lost, including a beautiful volute—a signature scroll-shaped spiral—on the bottom of the step. This detail is very distinctive to 18th-century Georgian buildings.
Once the porch railings were removed, ACBA intern Sam Olmsted hand-excavated the dirt packed against the piazza's original 1770s foundation, one shovelful at a time. The reclaimed stone has been reset along the front, where the new porch will sit, with the uncovered volute on full display. Come see for yourself.
Follow along as the Deane piazza takes shape.

What a treat to spend the day Jay Heritage Center for their annual classic design lunch and lecture featuring Genevieve Wheeler Brown and Genevieve Wheeler Brown speaking about the NSCDA and the hidden women of delftware. A stroll through the gardens was equally transporting, and something we get to reprise in the fall when we return for part two of our series.

The Deane piazza is being rebuilt with wood from just two trees: one Connecticut oak, one Virginia pine.
Slides 1–2: old-growth white oak, felled here in Connecticut and milled at Moore's Sawmill in Bloomfield. It becomes the sill plate, the beam everything else rests on.
Slides 3–5: salvaged yellow pine from E. T. Moore Manufacturing, Inc. in Richmond, Virginia, headed for the porch posts. One felled, one salvaged, both for the same porch. Follow along as they take shape.

How many names from the American Revolution can you actually name?
Beyond Washington, the Continental Army was built on the courage of officers whose stories have largely gone untold. Until now.
What if we told you you can stand in the family home of one of those officers? Colonel Samuel Blachley Webb was an aide-de-camp to Washington and one of Connecticut's most dedicated patriot officers, and his historic home is right here.
And Webb wasn't alone. Captain Seth Harding, arguably the most prominent sailor to come from Connecticut during the Revolution, was one of the few who served from the war's very first engagements to its final battle at sea.
Portraits of Patriots brings Colonel Webb and five fellow patriots back into the spotlight, and the author is coming to the Webb Deane Stevens Museum to tell their stories.
Join us for the lecture and book signing. Hosted in-person and virtually.

In May 1781, George Washington stood right here at the Joseph Webb House to meet with French commander Rochambeau and plan the military campaign that would end the Revolutionary War at Yorktown.
This Memorial Day weekend, bring the whole family and step into that story at our annual Revolutionary War Encampment & Traditional Trades Fair.
Try your hand at colonial crafts and traditional trades in the Webb Barn, hunt for treasures with our scavenger hunt starting at the Wethersfield Historical Society, and find a quiet moment to reflect in our Rotary Room.
We are so excited to join forces with the Traditional Trades Fair for a full day marking America’s 250th anniversary.
The free festivities will begin on the Museum grounds immediately following the Town of Wethersfield's Memorial Day Parade on Saturday, May 23. Join us for a day of fun for the entire family.
