My students are most alive when improvising. Today while 2 third grade students played a beautiful duet on 2 g minor Rav drums, a usually very active boy, spontaneously moved his arms in a tai chi, meditative, and flowing way with his eyes closed, totally taking in and becoming the music. I invited him to stand up and he continued in a most expressive way. He had just himself been improvising on the Rav which invited him into this centered creative state.

Find out why improvisation should be part of every young musician's training. Sarah Tenney, founder and director of the acclaimed Marimba Magic at The Rivers School Conservatory in Weston, Mass., will elaborate at this year's MMEA All-State Conference in Boston.

I am so looking forward to bringing 5 Marimba Magic students to demonstrate the Music for People techniques, showing how eager and excited children are to create their own music. Participants will have the opportunity to play Rav drums, marimbas, glockenspiel, metalophone, shruti boxes, Remo Tubanos, whole tone aluphone, and a multitude of other percussion instruments as they too delight in expressing themselves!
