๐ In my LinkedIn newsletter last Friday, I wrote about the Silent Nudges We Rarely Notice but Often Feel.
๐ The post focused on how our subconscious mind influences many of our decisions, even when weโre unaware of it. Not long after writing it, a perfect example came to mind.
๐ฅ I was working out in my basement gym. Iโve always been a boxing fan, and hanging on the wall is a poster from the Buster Douglas-Mike Tyson fight, one of the biggest upsets in sports history.
๐ณ As I looked at the poster, someone unexpectedly came to mind.
๐ค The poster has been in my basement for more than a decade, and I canโt recall a single time it ever made me think of this person. At first, I wondered why he popped into my head. Then I remembered that I watched the fight at his house, February 11, 1990. Maybe that was it, but if so, why now?

๐ถ If you've raised kids you know this is true because so often they bring up things parents say... much to the dismay of mom or dad.
๐ฅ At work, an innocent comment can ignite the rumor mill so we would do well to heed the Apostle Paul's words, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." (Eph 4:29)

๐ค Most people familiar with Dr. Robert Cialdiniโs work know the seven principles of influence. But thereโs another psychological concept that deserves attention because itโs always at work in our thinking. Itโs called contrast.
๐ Simply put, people understand things by comparing them to something else.
When someone says a person is tall, what do they mean? Tall compared to whom?
๐โโ๏ธ The same is true for weight, distance, speed, price, success, and countless other aspects of life. We rarely evaluate things in isolation. We evaluate them in comparison to something else. Thatโs how the human mind works.
๐๏ธ This idea was top of mind recently as I listened to one of my favorite podcasts, The Dallas Willard Podcast. During the discussion, Dallas Willard made an observation that caught my attention, โContrast is the way the mind works. When Jesus came to teach, he taught by contrast because it suited the human mind.โ

๐ค Sometimes we aren't focused on changing how someone thinks or feels, we just want to see a behavior change. However...
๐ง ...if we can influence how someone thinks or feels, at the heart level, that might impact their self-identity.
โ๏ธ This is where Lasting change (The "L" in PEOPLE) can take place.
โAnd why is that so important?
๐ช When lasting change happens, quite often you don't need to continue to influence the other person because they naturally start living in alignment with how they see themselves.

๐ฏ We all intuitively know about scarcity because we naturally want what we think we can't have or what might be going away.
โค๏ธ Maybe you saw it when dating. You broke up with someone but as soon as you found out they were dating someone else, you started to want them again.
๐ Perhaps you were at the store considering a purchase. A salesperson informs you what you're looking at is the last one. Something inside you suddenly wants that thing even more.
๐ One last example... you rush somewhere (store, movie, sporting event) to get in before the doors close.
โ๏ธ If you want to be more persuasive, the BIG question is โก๏ธ Do you know how to leverage scarcity?
๐ Tom Sawyer did... and enjoyed a day fishing because of it.
