Sue’s Chinese Grocery

I am a few days behind, but here we go…

Three years ago, there was a little Asian grocery store in my town that was facing closure.

My mom used to shop there too.

My first thought was, “It would be so inconvenient for people if this store closed, especially for some of the elderly customers who can’t travel too far.”

I knew absolutely nothing about running a business. But there was one thing I knew for sure—I had a very supportive family behind me.

So, I reached out to the owner. With a handshake and a check, she handed me the key.

Just like that… I had a grocery store.

When I first walked through the doors, the shelves were nearly empty. I honestly had no idea what I was doing.

Luckily, the previous two owners were kind enough to help me get started. They helped me contact vendors and figure out inventory. My mom and dad came to help clean the store. My husband drove to New York to pick up inventory.

Little by little, the shelves became fuller.
Little by little, we brought in more products and more varieties. And little by little, more people started walking through our doors. We started seeing familiar faces. We started seeing new faces. Some of you come once a week. Some of you come twice a week.

And slowly, something really special happened.
Strangers became customers.�Customers became familiar faces.�And familiar faces became friends.
We started sharing stories. We shared recipes. We talked about our families. We laughed together. We celebrated little moments together. And without even realizing it, we were making memories.

Even on the days when husband drives to New York picking up inventory, the vendors we work with have become more than just vendors. They have become friends too. They share their stories, their hard work, and the challenges they face. And when we’ve run into our own roadblocks, they have been there to help us.

Have I ever thought about giving up?
Yes. I have.

Have I given up?
NO. NEVER. ❤️

Looking back now, I realize that three years ago, I didn’t just take over a grocery store.
I gained friendships I never expected.�I shared laughs I’ll never forget.�I made memories that I will always treasure.
And for all of that, I am incredibly grateful.
To every single person who has walked through our doors—thank you.

I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything.
