Calling all local veterans!🇺🇸

We are currently gathering interest from veterans who may be willing to share their stories and experiences with students during our Patriot’s Pen Veteran Showcase, planned for October 5–9.

This year’s essay theme is “What I Learned About America from Our Veterans.” By sharing your firsthand perspective, you can help students build meaningful connections to American history, service, sacrifice, and citizenship.

Veterans may be invited to:
- Share a short story or meaningful memory from their service
- Talk about what they learned about America through service
- Bring a meaningful photograph, uniform, medal, letter, or other item to share with students

An updated CORI is required for anyone visiting to work with students. CORI checks are available at 11 Central Street with a valid ID.

Coburn Elementary School has officially been named a Massachusetts School of Recognition by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education! 🎉🏫

This incredible honor recognizes the hard work, dedication, and commitment of Coburn’s students, educators, staff, families, and the entire school community.

Coburn is now the third West Springfield school in three years to earn this distinguished designation — a reflection of the excellence happening across our district every day.

Important Parking Reminder for the West Springfield Community! 📢

As the Big E kicks off, we want to gently remind everyone about parking rules near Memorial School during the school day (Monday through Friday):

School Hours Parking: The Memorial School parking lot is strictly reserved for Memorial School teachers, staff, parents, and official school visitors.

Fair Visitors: The school lot is not an open parking area for the Big E, except on the specific days/times organized and managed by our student groups for their official fundraisers.

With school in full session, our top priority is keeping our kiddos safe and ensuring our staff and families have access to the building. Please be mindful of our students and plan ahead to find alternative parking areas for the fair.

Every student in West Springfield deserves a safe trip to and from school.

Each day, our students walk, bike, wait at bus stops, board buses, and cross busy streets on their way to learn and grow. Keeping them safe is a community effort, and local drivers play a key role.

How drivers can protect West Springfield students:
Stop for school buses: Never pass a bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm.
Slow down in school zones: Obey posted speed limits and stay alert for sudden stops.
Watch crosswalks: Always yield to pedestrians and keep an eye out for children stepping off the curb.
Plan ahead: Leave a few extra minutes in the morning so you don't feel rushed and can take it slow.

Let's work together to ensure every child arrives safely at school and makes it back home every afternoon. Slow down, stay alert, and drive safe!

Whether your child rides a bike or an e-bike, a few simple safety habits can make a big difference. As students are out riding in our neighborhoods and traveling to and from school, we encourage families to review these important bike and e-bike safety tips together.

Wear a helmet. Follow the rules of the road. Stay visible. Be predictable. Stay alert.

Today, the West Springfield School Department joined our community in honoring the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

A special thank-you to the West Springfield High School Band for their moving performance and to the students from Coburn School for leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Your participation helped make this meaningful 25th-anniversary remembrance especially memorable.
