Be kind to our trees.

Many people think old or hollow trees are “finished,” but in nature they are some of the most useful trees in a forest. 🌳

Here’s what they support:

🦉 Bird habitats
Hollows in old trunks give owls, woodpeckers, and small birds safe places to rest and raise young.

🐿️ Small mammals
Squirrels often store food inside cavities, using the tree as a winter shelter.

🍄 Fungi growth
Bracket fungi and other species grow on old bark, helping break down wood and return nutrients to the soil.

🐛 Insect communities
Beetles, ants, and many other insects live inside the tree. These insects feed other animals and help create healthy soil.

🌱 Seedlings and new plants
As the wood breaks down, it becomes a natural base for moss, seedlings, and young plants.

When an old tree is removed, all these small habitats disappear at once.
Instead of calling them “dead,” it’s useful to think of them as micro-ecosystems that support many forms of life.

Protecting old trees helps keep forests healthy. 🌿

**Big Bird Surge Starts Sunday Night**

The air space 1,000 to 3,000 feet above our heads will be very busy this week starting on Sunday night. Each night is expected to bring more than 10 million birds migrating north. This is likely to be the busiest 5 night period of the year for the spring migration. Warblers will make up the majority of the bird surge along with Baltimore Orioles and Scarlet Tanagers in the mix. You can help this year's migration by turning off those outdoor lights at night.

The Tree Bus will no longer be, due to high insurance cost but have no fear, we will be going Mobil with all our displays. Our first showing will be at the Big E in September. More information will be shared in the future. Thank you for all your support.
