Team Update:

After a week of assisting residents in flash flood-prone areas of Ruidoso, New Mexico, UT-TF1 has returned home safely. It was an honor to serve the citizens of the Village of Ruidoso alongside our local, state, and federal partners.

On Wednesday, July 9, Utah Task Force 1 (UT-TF1) was deployed to Ruidoso, New Mexico, following a request for assistance after severe flash flooding impacted the Village community.

This region was severely affected by last year’s devastating wildfires, leaving behind burn scar areas that are now especially vulnerable to rapid runoff and flash flooding during heavy rainfall.

Over the past week, monsoon moisture has triggered scattered thunderstorms and intense downpours, resulting in multiple flash flood events across the area. These conditions have caused dangerous floodwaters to sweep through burn scar zones, and other areas, threatening residents, infrastructure, and response workers.

UT-TF1 has been actively engaged in:
✅ Reconnaissance of flood-impacted zones
✅ Monitoring and preparing for immediate search and rescue missions
✅ Conducting joint training with local, state, and federal agencies
✅ Performing numerous floodwater assists to help residents and workers caught in fast-moving floodwaters

The team remains ready to respond at a moment’s notice and is deeply honored to support the Village of Ruidoso in this challenging time.

It is with great sadness that Missouri Task Force 1 announces the line of duty death of Heavy Rigging Specialist Larry Duncan.

On September 11, 2001, the FEMA National Operations Center issued activation orders for Missouri Task Force 1 to deploy to New York City in response to the terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center towers. Sixty-two brave men and women of Missouri Task Force 1 left their homes, their work, their friends and their families to deploy to “Ground Zero”. Missouri Task Force 1 spent 10 days scouring the rubble that was once the World Trade Center complex for survivors. Larry Duncan was a member of that team. He was one of the many courageous responders who worked “the pile” day after day. The hazards were great and the loss of life from that day is still occurring due to the toxic materials responders encountered. Tragically, as a result of these exposures, Larry succumbed to a 9/11-related cancer on January 15, 2025.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Markland-Yeager Funeral Home in New Franklin, Missouri and will be announced on their completion.
