NPS has been an industry leader for the past 50 years. Most of this driven by Dennis’ passion of spreading Pedorthics not only throughout the USA but worldwide…more on that in a later post.
Dennis and Jeremy have been involved in and/or leading Pedorthic Education for the past 30 years. NPS collaborated with PW Minor throughout the 90s with Xtra Depth University, training a large percentage of the incoming pedorthists of that era. Shortly thereafter we oversaw all of the pedorthic education at Ball State University and Dennis and Jeremy are now core faculty at the Midwest School of Modern Pedorthics. Dennis has also participated in the pedorthic education at Century College and Northwestern University.
NPS is generally well represented at and often lecturing at the industries’ primary meetings and symposiums such as the PFA symposium, AOPA and AAOP conferences, Primefare Scientific Symposium and many other local industry meetings. Dennis and Jeremy both presented at this past AOPA conference in Orlando and Dennis will be speaking at this year’s conference.
Dennis has over 80 publications to his credit and brings his message and passion of pedorthics to countless others through online and in-person lectures still to this day.
Dennis and Jeremy have worked in partnership with many companies over the years in consultation, advisory, and education roles such as PW Minor, Orthofeet, OHI, Tamarack, Thorogood, and Dr. Comfort. They have also led the way in different partnerships in research, product development and design as well as orthotic software design.
Dennis is a past president of PFA (Pedorthic Footcare Association), a Seymour Lefton award winner and he recently received the PFA “Founders” award.
NPS continues to train the future of the industry, keeping up with new and innovative products, materials, and techniques while always staying grounded in the tradition of NPS’s handcraftsmanship and personalized products that we have been delivering to our patients for half a century.

Time is flying by!!
A few weeks back, Dennis and Jeremy were able to attend the WPMA meeting in Brookfield. It was great to connect with some new and some long standing friends!
Always a pleasure to share some of product offerings and services with these foot and ankle specialists!

In the 1970’s, “footwear solutions” were primarily external to the shoe itself. What could you put on the outside of the shoe to redirect the foot and ankle? As the orthopedic shoe industry advanced throughout the 80s-90s it became much more about what could be done inside the shoe. Into the 2000s the entire shoe industry evolved, and most shoes now allow for internal devices to improve the functionality of the foot and ankle. Throughout it all, NPS was innovating while staying grounded in the roots of Pedorthics. Whether we were helping test innovative products for other companies or developing new products and methods of fabrication for ourselves, the patient’s needs were always at the center of our custom product line. As we sit in 2026, we offer everything from elevations on shoes to rocker sole modifications to modifying shoes to fit deformity of the feet. We offer accommodative inserts for “at risk” feet as well as semi rigid total contact orthoses and traditional functional orthoses for control and function of the foot and ankle. We also provide multiple foot and ankle braces to address more severe cases, custom molded sandals offering non-shoe alternatives and even custom molded shoes to address severe foot deformities. There really isn’t a Pedorthic product we don’t utilize or a product that we cannot fabricate on-site quickly for our patients.

The beginnings of NPS were rooted in Shoe Repair. Now considered a dying profession, shoe repair gave Dennis a very needed skill set to pave the way for building custom orthotics and specialized devices treating our patient’s needs for the next 50 years. He passed this skill set onto his 2 sons, and they have passed it on to countless others. NPS has a tradition of hand-built products utilizing a multitude of tools and equipment ranging over the years from one-hundred-year-old sewing machines to Computer-Aided design and manufacturing. Whether we are developing new and innovative products or building “tried and true” modalities that have been around for the past 100 years, we call upon the hand craftmanship developed in Dennis’ shoe repair roots.

A Family Tradition Since 1972
The business was founded in 1972 under the name of Dennis’ Shoes and Repair. Dennis will often tell stories of his 3 children growing up in the business…literally in a crib off the main store floor.
The company was founded by Dennis and Beth Janisse. Through the early years, all 3 of Dennis’ sisters worked at NPS. Both of Dennis’ sons (Erick and Jeremy) had long tenures at NPS. Dennis’ wife Dawn and her sister and brother-in-law all held prominent roles at NPS over the years. Jeremy’s oldest son worked in the fabrication lab for a period, and his wife Nicole oversaw operations for many years. 2 of Jeremy’s sisters-in-law also worked at NPS during the 2000s.
The idea of “family” was always felt. Whether you were a blood relative or not, you were part of the “NPS Family”. Many employees over the years worked alongside their brothers, sisters, or cousins. In addition to that, many strong, family-like bonds were built within the hundreds of staff members at NPS.
Currently, only Dennis and Jeremy remain, but the family feel at NPS has survived the test of time.

Matthew 28:5-6
5 The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay.

NPS has carried many mottos over the years. It is always helpful to look back before we look ahead.
The 90’s brought one of the longest standing mottos of NPS’s history and it hit right on the money where NPS stood in the profession at that time. “Setting the Pace” was the motto and NPS was doing just that in the 90s on into the 2000s. NPS was unique as a stand-alone full service Pedorthic company. We had multiple offices in Wisconsin as well as 3-4 offices outside the state. In Wisconsin we had our own full service central fabrication lab that serviced all our Pedorthic offices. We were leading the charge in Pedorthic education as primary staff at both Xtra Depth University as well as the Ball State Pedorthic School. Many of us were also lecturing at national meetings, educating local medical providers in Pedorthics and Dennis was taking it worldwide with his very unique outreach. At home in Wisconsin, NPS was taking 3rd party reimbursement on in full force which was not common at that time in our industry. Across all aspects of the Pedorthic industry NPS was truly “Setting the Pace”.
In the 2000s, NPS was not slowing down but refocused our motto to what we were really all about. “Helping you every step of the way...” became our new motto. It reflected our approach with our patients primarily but also kept a higher-level meaning in our role in the industry. We were still spreading the benefits of Pedorthics to our colleagues in the industry, the medical community here in the US and worldwide. We were helping our patients with their foot and ankle issues, helping the medical community build Pedorthic roots into their practice and helping the future pedorthists with the needed knowledge and skills to be successful. We expanded our care from not just the foot but to foot and ankle as many of our practitioners took the next steps beyond Pedorthic certification to also Orthotics Certification and Orthotic Assistant and Fitter Certifications. We also expanded our fabrication lab and began to offer our fabrication services to others in the industry.
The 2010s brought a different climate to NPS’s business model. Challenges had developed with 3rd party reimbursement not only for NPS but for the industry at large. NPS became one of the first Pedorthic facilities to shift to 100% digital medical records and began utilizing digital scanning and CAD/CAM fabrication technology which helped to streamline a very complex business model. We then looked to other avenues for the business and took major steps into a more retail approach to Pedorthics which is what really spawned the motto “Step into Comfort”.
As we now move forward as a company, it is important to look back to where we came from, what we lived through and the impact we’ve had. The newest motto “…Since 1972” is just that. It is a celebration of over 50 years of NPS. Watch for a series of “…Since 1972” posts celebrating the NPS story. Coming soon!
