You should almost never need to enter a password to open a document.

From someone you know? Maybe, if they warned you ahead of time.

From someone you don’t know? Absolutely not. That’s not a “secure file,” that’s a baited hook.

Unexpected password-protected documents are a favorite phishing trick for stealing credentials or installing malware. When in doubt, verify with the sender through another channel… or just don’t open it.

If it feels off, it probably is. You can always call your IT team to help verify.
