Are high-value reinforcers always better?
Maybe not. It depends on the (criteria of the) behavior you're trying to train.
In our LIVE Q&A with Ken Ramirez, we discussed the often debated use of a "jackpot" and how using a high-value reinforcer might be a detriment to your training, if you're looking for precision over speed.

Book Quote from "Eye of the Trainer" by Ken Ramirez:
There is no magic in the clicker; it’s just a toy noisemaker.
The effectiveness comes from the way we use it combined with other tools.
The click facilitates consistent, immediate communication.
The accuracy of the clicker is based on our ability to observe behavior and react appropriately.

Ultimately, it is most important to look at your animal’s behavior to determine whether your use of reinforcement is successful.
If you are seeing behavior that you like and want, your use of reinforcement is working.
If you are not seeing desirable behavior, then something in your reinforcement plan needs to change.

Book Quote from "Separation Anxiety in Dogs" by Malena DeMartini:
Calculated reasoning is not in a dog’s repertoire.
The guilty look that some dogs display is commonly used as a case argument for the naughty-dog-syndrome.
However, it has been shown in many studies that these guilty-appearing behaviors are born of something completely different.
The appearance of guilt is typically associated with a fear response to the owner’s reaction.
Guilt is not a dog-construct, as dogs have no moral compass.
Many people disagree with that statement, but I would urge
you to consider this or research it further while thinking critically.
Being virtuous requires a type of cognitive reasoning that dogs do not possess.
Dogs can react to our irritated or angry emotions, even in the absence of punishment.
This look is simply born of association and is anticipatory
in nature.
The statement “he knows better” needs to be removed from our dog-related language!
