I’ve spent many years wandering the prairies of Northern Colorado and expounding about their mysteries and delights to artists, scientists—and anyone else who will listen! Over that time, I’ve sketched or painted various illustrations to accompany articles I’ve written or for interpretive signage. I’ve created a set of notecards that feature some of that artwork with a brief description in the hopes that others will enjoy viewing them and giving them to friends. My “Prairie Predator” is the adorable prairie dog assassin known as the Black-footed Ferret. The wild violet teams up with harvester ants to reproduce, as depicted on my card titled “Prairie Partners.” The “Spotted Towhee” sings heartily from the top of a Mountain Mahogany bush. I had a chance to attend the 30th Anniversary of the City of Fort Collins Natural Areas program. This has been a fantastic effort of acquiring natural areas in and around Fort Collins to both preserve habitat and provide great recreation/educational opportunities. If you are wandering around the natural areas near Fort Collins, you may notice that the rabbitbrush plants have been invaded by dark, blue-green larvae. They belong to a beetle in the genus Trirhabda that specializes in munching on rabbitbrush. The adults (not in evidence yet) look like the beetle I've sketched on the right. The larvae serve as great treats for black birds.

I received good news yesterday. My essay, "Starlings: Fascinating Garden-Variety Dinosaurs," is a finalist in this year's Colorado Authors' League Awards. Winners are announced June 19. Wish me luck!
