Meet WritingTutor Annika Schafer:

Where is your favorite place to write papers?
My favorite place to write papers is in a corner of El Table, listening to loud music.

What font do you use, and why?
The best font to write in is Garamond in my opinion; it is professional-looking but not too stuffy and the serifs are very pretty.

Meet Lucy Cheskin

Wed: 11-12pm Thurs: 4-5pm Sun: 3-5pm

Where is your favorite place to write papers?

My favorite place on campus to write papers is in the library at a table overlooking the lake. I love all of the natural light and find looking out at the water to be very calming. Especially if the paper requires research, writing in the library is perfect. It’s great to be able to easily look for a book or run downstairs to print an article.

What advice do you have for writers?

Sometimes the hardest part about writing is getting started. When I find myself having trouble getting started, it helps me to remember that writing is a process. I remind myself that whatever I write now is a draft and is in no way set in stone. When you begin drafting, don’t be afraid to just start writing without worrying too much about your word choice or sentence structure. Focus more on the ideas you want to get across. Once you have something down on paper it becomes a lot easier to go back and edit. Often, starting with a quick free-write is a great way to get your ideas flowing and to remind yourself that your paper won’t be a polished final draft on the first try.

Where is your favorite place to write papers?

I love writing in the libraries when the deadlines are far away, but I can write anywhere when the deadline is near in sight.

What do you do when you get stuck during the writing process?

Oh man, getting stuck – this is probably the worst thing that I dread. But despair not, for there is always a way out. It’s not always the same – how I get myself out of the bottlenecks. What usually work are some walks in nature, talking to a writing tutor (shameless plug?), a professor, or a friend, or simply shutting the computer or your notebook and returning to it later. The most important thing to note, though, is that, because getting stuck is such a natural thing in the writing process, and that it takes time to get “unstuck,” we need to leave plenty of time for it and start our papers early – or ask for reasonable extensions!

Meet Jill Mankoff

Mon: 9-11am Thurs: 9-11am

Where is your favorite place to write papers?

I love writing in El Table while drinking a good cup of coffee.

Why did you decide to become a writing tutor?

I decided to become a writing tutor because I want to help people learn to love writing. It’s so satisfying when you find an idea you love or discover the right word to best explain your point.

What do you do when you get stuck during the writing process?

When I get stuck while writing I like to take a walk. I find getting away from my computer and into a peaceful environment helps me come up with new ideas. Wellesley also has such a beautiful campus to walk around!

Meet Haruka Ueda

Tues: 5-6pm Wed: 5-6pm Thurs: 7-9pm

What advice do you have for writers?

Come to the writing tutors! Go to your department tutors! Utilize these resources and get help! Even just the feeling of being supported will warm you up in this (soon!) snow cold Boston weather. I didn't know about them for so long, and I really wish I had, especially in my first/second year. The vague questions you have that you've never asked (while writing: "how many paragraphs do I need?" while brainstorming: "I have so many ideas how do I connect them in such a short paper?") they can be solved with a quick visit!

What do you do when you get stuck during the writing process?

As strange as this sounds, I like to talk to myself in front of the mirror. I'll go over my argument like I'm presenting this to my imaginary YouTube audience. When I'm really stuck, I sometimes record myself talking on my phone so I don't lose ideas and I can later organize my thoughts.
