As oil crosses $100 a barrel and gas prices climb, the illusion of energy independence is fading fast.
Not for me though — my house and my car run entirely on solar. No fuel costs, no headlines, no problem.
🌞
Solar brought in 103 kWh’s for the day, we used 53 kWH’s. 16 kWh’s went into the Tesla (70 miles), 24 kWh’s went to heat (quite cold for March), the remaining 13 kWh’s for everything else. 50 kWh’s back into the grid, you’re welcome. Oh and the off-grid shop brought in 13kWh’s.

No fuel, no fuel docks, no filters, no pumps, no blowers, no oil, no coolant, no winterizing, no smell, no noise (relative), no scheduled maintenance of any kind with the propulsion system. Turn on the battery switch, hit the throttle and go. That’s all there is to it.
⚡️
Over the past 3 days I logged 41 miles in the open ocean. I still have 32% battery remaining. Total cost of the trip was $2.77 in electricity.

The default is turtle mode for daily driving. If you want to turn it up a notch or twelve there is hidden switch that can only be trigger with a special magnet. I wasn’t able to keep the wheel on the ground to get a good 0-60 but I’m pretty sure it’s under 5 seconds. Honestly it’s way too much power. Turtle mode is set to 35% of max power and it’s plenty quick.

1.1 KW walkable custom solar hard top on an Oyster 45. This will bring in 6 KWH’s on a good day. The panel is reinforced with carbon fiber which allowed us to get away without any rear supports. This really opens the back of the cockpit.

Three adults, a 10-foot flat-bottom dinghy, and we were able to get up on a plane easily and hit 15 knots. This is the first electric outboard that excites me! Plenty of power, one cable for power/communication, and it only weighs 48 lbs. It’s a 10 kW motor, which is comparable to about a 15-20 hp gasoline outboard.
