Binge unsubscribing today. I get a 100 emails every day about things I have no interest in. After that, changing all my passwords to online financial accounts. I recommend you all do the same at least twice a year.
The ransomware problem is getting out of hand. The main reason is that there is no system than can guarantee to stop it from happening. The best thing you can do is protect your critical systems with full backups done on an hourly basis. This will make recovery relatively painless and you won't ever have to pay a ransom. If you don't have controls in place requiring direct contact from the owner before any money request is performed, you could end up like this. I'd suggest requiring a FaceTime or Skype video call to confirm it's really "the boss."
