A Passion for Purpose - Colby News 10/01/2026

Matthew Herrick ’27 has been named a Newman Civic Fellow by Campus Compact. The national award recognizes student leaders who demonstrate exceptional potential for public impact and a commitment to creating lasting, positive change in their communities.

As executive director of the Colby Community Health Program, Herrick reimagined how students engage with the Mid-Maine Homeless Shelter, shifting away from traditional lectures to facilitate interactive conversations and workshops on healthy habits and nutrition. Through the yearlong fellowship, Herrick joins a nationwide network of fellows receiving mentorship and resources to deepen their community-building efforts.

Experiencing Art Through Language - Colby News 09/29/2026

Museum audio guides and traditional placards often lack the spatial details that visually impaired visitors need to form a mental image of an artwork.

To bridge this gap, computer scientist Stacy Doore and art historian Véronique Plesch are combining computer vision and artificial intelligence to generate accessible image descriptions. Starting this spring, Colby students will join the project through a new interdisciplinary course to audit and refine these descriptions alongside the blind and low-vision community.
