Celebrating Excellence in Nurse Education
The Allen College School of Nursing recently surprised Joy Wilcox during class on April 29, 2026, with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurse Educators—a well-deserved honor recognizing her remarkable impact on students.
“I am nominating Joy not just for her excellence in teaching, but for demonstrating the heart of nursing in a way that forever changed how I view patient care… She has pushed me, encouraged me, and given me a safe space to learn and grow. I have never felt more cared about by an instructor.”
Joy’s passion, compassion, and dedication truly embody the spirit of nursing and education.
As part of the recognition, she received the Healer’s Touch sculpture, a hand-carved piece created by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe—symbolizing the unique and powerful connection between nurses and their patients, and educators and their students.
Please join us in congratulating Joy on this meaningful achievement!

As our mission trip comes to a close, we are reflecting on the many ways God has worked throughout this journey in Guatemala.
This week, students continued serving in the medical clinic, caring for patients and learning from healthcare providers. One student had the incredible opportunity to witness the birth of a baby—a powerful reminder of God’s gift of life and the privilege of caring for others during some of their most significant moments.
We also spent more time with the missionary children, building friendships, sharing laughter, and encouraging one another in faith. Hearing the testimonies of missionaries serving in Guatemala gave us a deeper appreciation for their commitment, sacrifices, and trust in God’s calling.
We had a competitive game of soccer with some of the missionaries and the nursing staff. It was a great way to cap off the week with Adonai staff.
Before beginning our journey home, we spent time exploring the beautiful city of Antigua, taking in its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on all we had experienced and learned throughout the week.
We are grateful for safe travels, the relationships formed, the lessons learned, and the countless ways we witnessed God’s love in action. Thank you to everyone who prayed for and supported this trip. We return home with hearts full of gratitude and memories that will last a lifetime.

We just got an update from our students and faculty in Guatemala! ⬇️
We had safe flights and travels into Canilla and are grateful to have arrived well. Over the past few days, our team has had many meaningful opportunities to serve and connect with the people here in Guatemala.
Our group has spent time with missionary kids sharing Bible lessons and activities as well as visited a local school where we taught the stories of Daniel in the lions’ den and Joseph and his brothers, reminding the children that God loves us always and is with us through every circumstance.
We also traveled to a clinic in the mountains that primarily serves indigenous Guatemalan communities. There, students assisted with assessments and vital signs while learning more about healthcare challenges in rural areas. Two of our students were also able to visit a widow in her home because she is too ill to travel to the clinic herself.
Today in Canilla, we cared for many prenatal patients, pediatric patients, and individuals managing chronic conditions such as high blood pressure. It has been a humbling and rewarding experience to serve alongside the local healthcare team and community.
We are looking forward to the rest of the week and are excited to see what God will continue to reveal to us in the coming days. Please continue thinking about us and praying for our team, the patients we serve, and the communities welcoming us so warmly.
