Math help for elementary school children in Waterbury

3rd Graders learn to multiply.

Here's a picture of Cuisenaire Rods, which come in 10 different colors to represent the numbers 1 - 10. The dark green blocks are 6s, and the purple blocks are 4s.

We use them to show that 4 x 6 and 6 x 4 are equal to 24. The number line is recessed so the blocks stay in place. The same process works for division.

Here's a Grade 1 addition activity:

Sometimes 1st Graders count out numbers 3 times to add. Here is an example of how we can teach students to add by "chunking" the 4 to see that 4 + 3 = 7.

Put 4 cubes in a cup. Put a second cup on top of it. The student knows how many cubes are in the first cup, but can't count them out. Now put 3 cubes in the top cup. How many cubes in all?
