On Tuesday evening, Base Camp students Daniela Padilla, Aleah Bean, and Lemuel Tzib were invited to the Water Valley City Council meeting to discuss their final Capstone Project before graduation. Their website will allow ER Assist to efficiently track donations and volunteer hours in response to the recent Ice Storm in North Mississippi. Thanks to Brandon Presley and the Water Valley City Council for giving our students the opportunity to put their software development skills to work for the community!

We would like to thank Kahilyn Boyd, a Cyber Security Automation Engineer at C Spire, for taking the time to talk to the students about his journey from Software Development into Cybersecurity, Kahilyn also gave advice about crafting resumes, pursuing further training and certifications, and encouraging students to seize every opportunity that they come across. And thanks as always to the Base Camp Alumni Association for all of their support this year.

In the final weeks of the curriculum, Base Camp students collaborate on a Capstone Project, which is an opportunity to work with a real-world client in need of software development solutions, and to put all of their technical skills on display. Our students are responsible to meet with their clients and understand their requirements and deadlines, make their own technical recommendations based on their expertise, and hand off the finished product before graduation. We’ve all seen how computer programmers are portrayed in the media–isolated, staring at the computer screen. But most software developers work as part of a team, and so Base Camp students are always collaborating. And not just on their technical projects. Students work on community events, our newsletter and social media accounts, and even work together to prepare lunch everyday and maintain our facility.
