Plants must distinguish between warmth that can be used for growth and heat from which they need to protect themselves. How they make that distinction has become a central problem in the study of plant temperature responses.
The field has explained much about how cells survive high temperature through the heat shock response but less about how plants distinguish one thermal range from the next. Both warmth and heat stress alter lipid composition, protein mobility, and local membrane properties at the cell surface, making the membrane a likely site for this earliest interpretation of temperature.
In a new Science study, researchers report that the receptor kinase FERONIA is an early thermoresponsive component of the plasma membrane and has roles in both warmth-induced growth and heat protection.
