Proposed bill could allow heavier trucks on interstates, raising safety, infrastructure concerns 08/05/2026

Heavier trucks don't just mean heavier loads—they mean heavier costs for taxpayers.

A proposal to increase the federal truck weight limit from 80,000 to 91,000 pounds could put additional strain on roads and bridges, with more than 68,600 local bridges nationwide unable to safely accommodate these heavier trucks without costly upgrades. Replacing those bridges is estimated to cost more than $78.7 billion.

Freight rail helps reduce that burden. One train can move the equivalent of several hundred truckloads, easing congestion while moving freight more efficiently. It's one reason rail already moves about 40% of U.S. long-distance freight while producing just 1.8% of transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions.

Voices: A bill in Congress could hurt — or strengthen — the backbone of Utah’s economy 08/04/2026

Freight rail is the backbone of Utah's economy—and smart transportation policy can help keep it that way.

In this new op-ed, Ben Hart, Executive Director of the Utah Inland Port Authority explains why Congress should prioritize innovation and proven safety improvements as it develops the next surface transportation bill.

As Utah grows, freight rail will continue to play a critical role in keeping goods moving, supporting jobs, reducing congestion, and connecting businesses to markets across North America.
