Creative Grounds DC
Creative art space & coffee shop located in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Washington, DC. To see
Recently, we had the privilege of welcoming these beautiful sistas to Creative Grounds DC to discuss what it means to bring the wisdom, practice, and dignity of death and life care back into communities of color.
They are death doulas and community care workers, and challenged me to think about care not only at the end of life, but throughout it with a specific lens on love, advocacy, cultural traditions, and the ways we hold one another through transition.
In so many of our communities, conversations around death are often avoided, rushed, or disconnected from culture and collective care. But what would it look like to reclaim these practices with tenderness, honesty, and intention? What would it mean to ensure our communities are cared for with dignity at every stage of life?
Im so grateful Creative Grounds can be a space for conversations like these. Ladies, I look forward to having ya”ll back. (If you see this please tag yourselves or comment below)
Gotta say, work on view was the perfect backdrop to this discussion. 🖤

There was something especially tender about this moment.
Watching Ricky’s mother stand in front of her own portrait, looking at herself through the eyes of her son, felt like the exhibition quietly folding back onto itself. 💛Love witnessing love. A mother seeing how she has been seen, held, remembered.
Over the past few months, Ricky Day’s ( ) exhibition, “I do think it’s not asking too much for you to love…,” invited so many of us into conversations about care, intimacy, memory, family, softness, grief, and the complicated ways we try to love one another well.
Our final Coffee & Conversation on love and motherhood felt like the right closing note. People shared stories about mothers, chosen family, being cared for, being misunderstood, learning softness, and trying to pass love down differently than they received it.
We are deeply grateful to Ricky, his mother, (aka Mama Vivian-to me😜) and everyone who showed up, listened, shared, and allowed themselves to be moved.
I hope the experience of witnessing and being in community in this way stays with you.
Ricky, ( ) thank you, thank you. 🙏🏾
Folks we are nearing the official end- two weeks remaining, come take a look and show your support!

Early mornings just got a soundtrack.
Join us for The Morning Spin at Creative Grounds DC on Friday, 5/22 from 11AM–1PM featuring DJ XSA from House Callz serving up recorded live sets alongside hot coffee, good eats and even better company.
Trust me when I say mornings can actually be fun and productive, so come work from while Dj sets the mood.
Think less “rushing through your day” and more “slow sip, good music, good people.”
Free entry.
Good vibes.

I have the great privilege of being in community with so many people who have lovingly adopted me as their daughter. And, as the daughter of a woman who embodies so much of what I now try to share with my own children and with anyone willing to listen, I can’t help but feel immense gratitude today.
I hope all of you are loved and cared for exactly as you are.
And, as my daughter said, I hope you have respect, kindness, and coffee today.
