Today, the Senate HELP Committee took bipartisan action to protect key functions within the U.S. Department of Education and advance the Reading Excellence and Achievement for Development (READ) Act.

On Friday, Bloomberg Law reported on the Trump Administration’s rollback of key Department of Education mechanisms targeting subtle and unconscious forms of discrimination and bias in schools.
Disparate impact, an analysis both the Biden and Trump administrations have used, will no longer be considered; it typically asks whether a policy is equal in wording but unequal in effect.
Amy Loyd, CEO of All4Ed, provided comments, “Unconscious biases in how schools counsel female students about their coursework and career interests is a contributing factor to the disparity.
The Methods of Administration program provided guidance to states on how to ensure school counselors don't advise students or predict their success in a program based on their race, gender, disability, or other protected class."
She added: “I think we still are inadvertently counseling young men and young women, or our young people who come from disadvantaged backgrounds, into fields that may be undermatching them with their vision for their future and their potential.”
