Happy Tonys Sunday! 🎭🏆

Fifty years ago, at the 30th Tony Awards in 1976, Arena Stage was honored with the inaugural Regional Theatre Tony Award.

Presented by Christopher Plummer to Arena's Founding Director Zelda Fichandler, the award was given in recognition of providing the American theater with "an amazingly broad spectrum of new works, American premieres of important foreign plays, and distinguished revivals." Since then, the Regional Theatre Tony Award has been given annually to sister regional theaters around the country in celebration of their contributions to the American theater.

This year, we send special congratulations to:

👏 American Players Theatre in Spring Green, Wisconsin, for receiving the 2026 Regional Theatre Tony Award

👏 League of Resident Theatres (LORT)—which was co-founded in 1966 by Arena's Founding Executive Director Tom Fichandler and helped create the foundation for today's regional theaters—for its 2026 Special Tony Award in recognition of six decades of artistic excellence, collaboration, and investment in the future of American theater

👏 Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia—fellow LORT member and the country's longest-running professional Equity theater—for being the very-first regional theater to receive a Tony Award in 1948
