In July, Quenica Thornton began a new journey as a Customer Advocate with Blue Cross Blue Shield Morgan Park. Starting this role was both exciting and challenging, requiring patience, confidence, and a strong willingness to grow. Even during moments of feeling overwhelmed, she remained determined and committed to learning each day. ⚕️

Thornton's progress was greatly supported by UCAN’s Employment Placement Services (EPS). Their Career Specialist encouraged Thornton consistently, helping her stay motivated and confident, especially during difficult moments. This guidance empowered them to keep moving forward and embrace every opportunity to learn.

From day one, Thornton was welcomed by a team that genuinely wanted to see them succeed.

Over the course of 12 weeks this summer, Bath Housing partnered with ecomaine to raise awareness, educate and increase recycling efforts with residents at the Moorings. During this period, Ecomaine conducted weekly audits, distributed education materials, delivered a presentation, attended by 10 residents, held a follow-up tabling session, and posted signage.

The findings showed significant improvement in recycling at this property! The contamination rate decreased from 14% to 7.9%. This helped improve their recycling volume, which increased buy 42%! That means less trash, which was also independently observed by our trash collector.

Just imagine: If Moorings residents keep recycling at this rate, they could divert 9,812 lbs. of material from our landfills in just one year!

Due to the success of this program, as well as the positive engagement and feedback from residents (who are regularly sporting their new, Ecomaine reusable recycling bags), we are planning to offer the program at Seacliff, Dike’s Landing, 520, 540, and 550 Centre St.

One resident summed it up perfectly: “I recycle. It’s important that everyone recycles.”
