Syrian Emergency Task Force

In 2016, the Assad regime launched a ruthless campaign against Aleppo, bombing civilian areas and indiscriminately spreading terror and death. In the midst of that violence, the regime dropped flyers with chilling instructions that urged residents to give up, lose all hope, and succumb to their grim fate.

Thousands of miles away, SETF sought desperately for a way to reach those on the ground. Our team had opened Wisdom House earlier that year, a kindergarten providing free education for children experiencing immense displacement and conflict in northwest Syria. From there, we began our very first Letters of Hope campaign, sending messages of love, perseverance, and support to bridge communities abroad and in Syria, letting them know they are never alone.

For ten years and well past the fall of the regime, Letters of Hope has continued to thrive and spread sentiments of promise for the bright future of Syria. We have held LOH writing events at camps, universities, and within our local communities, and it is our honor to see those messages being delivered to present-day Wisdom House students.

‫في عام ٢٠١٦، شنّ نظام الأسد حملةً وحشيةً ضد مدينة حلب، قصف خلالها المناطق المدنية ونشر الرعب والموت بشكل عشوائي. وفي خضم ذلك العنف، ألقى النظام منشورات حملت تعليمات مروّعة تحثّ السكان على الاستسلام، وفقدان الأمل، والخضوع لمصيرهم القاتم.‬

‫على بُعد آلاف الأميال، سعت المنظمة السورية للطوارئ (SETF) بشكل حثيث لإيجاد وسيلة للوصول إلى أولئك الموجودين على الأرض. كان فريقنا قد افتتح "دار الحكمة" في وقت سابق من ذلك العام، وهي روضة أطفال توفر تعليماً مجانياً للأطفال الذين يعانون من نزوحٍ هائل وصراعٍ في شمال غرب سوريا. ومن هناك، أطلقنا أول حملة لنا بعنوان "رسائل الأمل"، حيث أرسلنا رسائل المحبة والمثابرة والدعم لبناء جسور التواصل بين المجتمعات في الخارج وسوريا، وإبلاغهم بأنهم ليسوا وحدهم أبداً.‬

‫وعلى مدى عشر سنوات، وحتى بعد سقوط النظام، واصلت حملة "رسائل الأمل" ازدهارها ونشر رسائل التفاؤل بمستقبل مشرق لسوريا. وقد نظمنا فعاليات لكتابة رسائل الأمل في المخيمات والجامعات وداخل مجتمعاتنا المحلية، ويشرّفنا أن نرى تلك الرسائل تُسلَّم اليوم إلى طلاب "دار الحكمة" في الوقت الحاضر.‬

Each summer, high school students gather at the Model United Nations Summer Camp at the University of Central Arkansas to explore global issues, practice diplomacy, and develop leadership skills. On July 17, we were honored to participate and share Syria’s story with these future leaders, whose curiosity and compassion inspire them to return to their schools, raise awareness, and participate in initiatives like our Letters of Hope project. Students heard from core members of our SETF team, including Executive Director Mouaz Moustafa and Director of Humanitarian Programs Natalie Larrison, as well as board member Jerry Adams and filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan.

في كل صيف، يجتمع طلاب المدارس الثانوية في المخيم الصيفي لـ نموذج الأمم المتحدة بجامعة أركنساس الوسطى لاستكشاف القضايا العالمية، والتدرب على العمل الدبلوماسية، وتنمية مهارات القيادة. وفي 17 يوليو، تشرفنا بالمشاركة وإطلاق هؤلاء القادة المستقبليين على قصة سوريا. ويحفزهم فضولهم وتعاطفهم على العودة إلى مدارسهم، ونشر الوعي والمشاركة في مبادرات مثل مشروعنا «رسائل الأمل».

استمع الطلاب إلى عدد من الأعضاء الأساسيين في فريق المنظمة السورية للطوارئ (SETF)، بمن فيهم المدير التنفيذي معاذ مصطفى، ومديرة البرامج الإنسانية ناتالي لاريسون، بالإضافة إلى عضو مجلس الإدارة جيري آدامز، والمخرج السينمائي إم. نايت شيامالان.

ونتوجه بجزيل الشكر إلى المتدربة لدينا، سيسيليا، على مساعدتها في تنظيم عرض هذا العام.

بعد مرور عام على اندلاع أعمال العنف بين قوات الحكومة السورية والجماعات المسلحة في محافظة السويداء جنوب البلاد، لا يزال السؤال المطروح هو: ما الذي ينتظر المنطقة في المرحلة المقبلة؟ وتلوح في الأفق مناقشات بشأن الاتفاقات السياسية، والإجراءات القضائية، وإعادة دمج الأشخاص النازحين، فيما تحث لجنة التحقيق التابعة للأمم المتحدة بشأن الجمهورية العربية السورية السلطات على إعطاء الأولوية لإشراك الضحايا في التحقيقات الجارية. وأضاف مديرنا التنفيذي، معاذ مصطفى، أن هناك مفاوضات غير معلنة تُجرى عبر قنوات خلفية للإفراج عن المعتقلين والمختطفين من كلا الجانبين، وهو ما يُعد أيضًا من أولويات لجنة التحقيق.

One year after violence broke out between Syrian government forces and armed groups in the southern province of Suweida, the question of what lies ahead for the region remains. Discussions around political agreements, judicial proceedings, and the reintegration of displaced persons lie ahead, with the UN Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic (CoI) urging authorities to prioritize victims’ involvement in ongoing investigations. Our Executive Director, Mouaz Moustafa, added that there have been back-channel negotiations to release detainees and kidnapped individuals on both sides, another priority of the CoI.

This past Sunday in Damascus, we hosted a special lecture at Al-Mouwasat University Hospital قسم أمراض العين وجراحتها - كلية الطب، جامعة دمشق in collaboration with Damascus University.

Dr. Mayssa Attar, Senior Vice President of Global Pharmaceutical R&D at Bausch + Lomb and one of the leading researchers in ophthalmic medicine, spoke to medical students and resident physicians about how artificial intelligence is transforming drug discovery and the future of ophthalmology.

Rebuilding Syria means rebuilding its institutions, and that includes its medical community. Events like this matter because Syria's future doctors and researchers deserve access to the same knowledge and innovation as anyone else in the world. We are proud to help make that possible.

تنعى المنظمة السورية للطوارئ صديقها العزيز حمود، الذي كان من بين خمسة وثلاثين شخصًا لقوا حتفهم في حادث حافلة مأساوي على الطريق بين دمشق ودير الزور، يوم الأحد السادس والعشرين من يوليو/تموز ٢٠٢٦.

وقف حمود إلى جانب فريقنا في الركبان، يُعيننا على إيصال المساعدات الإنسانية إلى آلاف الأشخاص الذين كانوا يعيشون تحت وطأة الحصار، ويدعم الفريق الطبي الذي يسّرنا دخوله إلى المخيم. حمى فريقنا، وأولى عنايةً صادقةً لكل من خدمناهم، وصار جزءًا لا يتجزأ من عائلة المنظمة السورية للطوارئ.

نحزن على حمود وعلى أسرته، وعلى الأرواح الأربع والثلاثين الأخرى التي رحلت. شجاعته، وطيب قلبه، وصداقته الغالية لن تُنسى أبدًا.

We mourn our dear friend Hamoud, who was among 35 people tragically killed in a bus crash traveling between Damascus and Deir ez-Zor on Sunday, July 26, 2026.

Hamoud stood alongside our team in Rukban, helping deliver humanitarian aid to thousands living under siege and supporting the medical team we facilitated into the camp. He protected our team, cared deeply for those we served, and became part of our SETF family.

We mourn Hamoud, his family, and the 34 other lives lost. His courage, kindness, and friendship will never be forgotten.

May he rest in peace.
