My Birthday Wish

Today, as I celebrate my 69th birthday, I am filled with gratitude and reflection. Back in April 2023, I was confronted with a life-changing diagnosis: stage 3 prostate cancer, with a PSA of 27 and a Gleason score of 4+3. Faced with this challenge, I made a commitment to learn as much as I could about this disease, which disproportionately affects African American men.

In my quest for knowledge, I sought a second opinion at the renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering Prostate Center in New York. This decision was pivotal, leading me to receive exceptional care, including HD Brachytherapy with SBRT/Proton radiation therapy(New York Proton Center) followed by six months of ADT. I am incredibly grateful for the outstanding medical team that guided me through this journey, and today, as I celebrate another birthday, I am filled with appreciation for the opportunity to continue living.

I am thrilled to share that I have achieved a PSA of 0.05, nine months post-treatment. This milestone is not just a personal victory; it underscores the importance of early detection and proactive health management. It is a testament to the dedication I have toward advocating for Black men’s health.

As the founder of Know Your Numbers DC, an initiative aimed at encouraging early testing for prostate cancer and other diseases affecting African American men, I am committed to promoting awareness and education in our community. I believe that by becoming informed partners in our healthcare, we can change the narrative around men’s health.

On this special day, I kindly ask for your support. If you feel moved to honor my birthday or anyone in your family affected by this disease, please consider making a donation to KYNDC.com.

Your contribution will help us continue our mission to empower Black men across the city to take charge of their health.

Thank you all for your prayers, support, and love. Here’s to life, health, and making a difference together!

Cheers!

5 Foods to Slow Down the Effects of Aging

As you age, the foods you eat can immensely affect your fitness, appearance, quality of life, and disease risk. The body relies on a variety of nutrients to support the natural aging process and some are essential for slowing down signs of aging and promoting healthful, youthful-looking skin.

Following are five power foods that can help slow down the signs of aging.
Extra virgin olive oil is known for its healthful fats and antioxidants which reduce inflammation and oxidative damage. Its monounsaturated fats can help combat skin aging by reducing inflammation.
Fatty fish, rich in omega-3 fats and antioxidants, supports heart health and skin aging by promoting collagen synthesis and improving skin elasticity.
Green tea, packed with antioxidants like EGCG and catechins, fights free radicals and reduces the risk of heart disease, neurological decline, and premature aging. Its polyphenols also protect the skin from environmental damage.
Vegetables, abundant in antioxidants like carotenoids and vitamin C, reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer while shielding the skin from UV damage and promoting collagen production.
Pomegranates, rich in antioxidants and nutrients like potassium, vitamins A and K, support healthy skin aging by protecting against UV radiation damage and hyperpigmentation.

How to Establish a men's health support group focused on the specific health issues that affect African American men in your Church or Civic organization. Here are 10 steps to help you get started:

Research and Planning: Identify research on the health issues that disproportionately affect African American men, such as prostate cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and others. Develop a clear understanding of these conditions and their impact on the community.

2. Identify Key Stakeholders:

Reach out to healthcare professionals, community leaders, and individuals who are passionate about men's health issues. Form a core group of individuals who can help you plan and launch the support group.

3. Define the Purpose and Goals:

Clearly define the purpose of the support group, such as providing education, support, and resources to African American men facing health challenges. Establish specific goals that you aim to achieve through the group.

4. Choose a Meeting Place and Schedule:

Decide on a convenient meeting place that is easily accessible to the target audience. Establish a regular meeting schedule that works for the majority of participants.

5. Develop a Curriculum:

Create a structured curriculum that covers topics related to prostate cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and other relevant health issues. Include information on prevention, early detection, treatment options, and lifestyle changes.

Note: Visit KYNDC.com for sample curriculum

6. Promote the Support Group:

Spread the word about the support group through various channels, such as flyers, social media, word of mouth, and community events. Reach out to local organizations, churches, and healthcare providers to help promote the group.

7. Recruit Facilitators and Speakers:

Identify healthcare professionals, counselors, or individuals with expertise in men's health to serve as facilitators and guest speakers for the support group meetings. Ensure that they are knowledgeable about the specific health issues affecting African American men.

8. Provide a Safe and Supportive Environment:

Create a welcoming and inclusive space where men feel comfortable sharing their experiences, concerns, and struggles related to their health. Encourage open and honest discussions while maintaining confidentiality and respect.

9. Evaluate and Adjust:

Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of the support group by seeking feedback from participants. Use this feedback to make adjustments to the curriculum, meeting format, or topics covered to better meet the needs of the group members.

10. Offer Resources and Support:

Connect participants with resources such as health screenings, support services, educational materials, and community programs that can help them manage their health conditions effectively. Encourage ongoing communication and support among group members outside of the meetings.

By following these steps, you can create a valuable men's health support group that addresses the specific needs of African American men and empowers them to take control of their health and well-being.
