While overall conflict levels have remained broadly stable, armed groups like the M23 are actively leveraging the health crisis to build local legitimacy and present themselves as governing authorities. At the same time, the Allied Democratic Forces continue to expand into affected provinces.
Surprisingly, these armed militias are not the main threat to health workers. Instead, the majority of attacks on Ebola responders stem from violent local mobs reacting to strict medical and burial protocols.

Russian drone attacks have hit hundreds of Ukrainian gas stations.
The New York Times has reported a new front in the war with Russia. Nearly 250 Ukrainian gas stations have been hit in recent months, in what officials, analysts and operators say is a systematic and deadly campaign of retaliation.
data show that Russian attacks seem to occur in clusters. Four stations in Poltava were hit between July 24 and 25. Three in Odessa were hit overnight between July 7 and 8. Stations in Sumy, Chernihiv, Poltava and Kharkiv also came under attack on July 3.

President Keiko ’s promises to pursue a hardline security agenda have renewed concerns over security-force accountability amid recent human-rights backsliding.
Between 2022 and 2023, protests against President Dina Boluarte were met with a harsh state response, resulting in the deaths of over 50 demonstrators.
In 2025, records at least 15 incidents of alleged abuse or disproportionate force by security forces during law enforcement operations outside demonstrations, resulting in at least six deaths.
These concerns are further compounded by a recent law that shifts jurisdiction over alleged crimes committed by police and military personnel from civilian to military courts.
Burkina Faso has become the epicentre of mining-related violence, accounting for 75% of mining-related events in the Sahel.
Industrial mining sites have become valuable assets for armed groups, turning the surrounding communities and supply routes into crucial conflict zones.

The devastating back-to-back earthquakes in have shifted the country's immediate focus to recovery and reconstruction. As the government seeks international support and resumes negotiations with the opposition, another challenge is emerging beyond the disaster zone.
While rebuilding damaged communities is an urgent priority, diverting state resources and attention away from already underserved regions could create new opportunities for armed groups and illicit networks to expand their influence.

BBC News reports concerns that Sudan's El Obeid could face another massacre as RSF drone attacks intensify.
Using data, BBC Verify notes that RSF fighters launched a record number of drone strikes on the city in June. At least 18 drone attacks were recorded during the month, the highest monthly total since the war began. The strikes have increasingly targeted critical infrastructure, while satellite imagery shows damage to at least 10 fuel stations.
As the RSF tightens its encirclement of El Obeid, concerns are growing that the city could face a further escalation in violence.
