Together, we can shine a light on global issues and uplift those in need. DREF, under the auspices of its Center for Research on African American Women (the Center), established the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Social Justice Institute in 2009 in honor of the late Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-Ohio). July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. Formally recognized as Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month, the observance was named in honor of Campbell, the Philadelphia-born author, teacher, and leader in advocating for mental health resources and specific needs in the Black and other underserved communities. Also called BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month.
The way mental health is approached and discussed, especially in the workplace, often leaves Black, Indigenous, and racially oppressed communities behind - it's important to designate space to talk about these issues openly and where leaders and members of these groups can participate.
While July observances include mental health awareness, it's important to remember that mental health is a year-round priority.
The DREF Sister Scholars Advisory Council released a report "From Disparity to Equity:
A Roadmap for Closing Black Healthcare Gaps ", highlighting the urgent need for targeted interventions addressing healthcare inequities in Black communities, with a focus on mental health.

DREF wishes everyone a safe and peaceful weekend, enjoying family and community gatherings, and making time for reflection on the challenges and opportunities we face as a nation. On this July 4th, we reflect on 250 years of Black resilience, innovation, and unwavering contributions to America.
From the brilliance of Benjamin Banneker who helped design Washington D.C., to the courage of Harriet Tubman who led hundreds to freedom. From the artistry of Maya Angelou who gave voice to our experiences, to the scientific genius of Katherine Johnson who helped put humans on the moon. Acknowledging the resilience and fortitude of Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Truth, Mary McCleod Bethune, Dr. Dorothy Height, and the founders of the Divine Nine. And, recognizing the efforts of current leaders like Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio); Stacey Abrams, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, and the list goes on. The Black American legacy of resilience, innovation, and excellence continues.
Black women and men have been the backbone of progress in this nation—through abolition, civil rights, literature, science, arts, politics, and every field imaginable. We've built communities, raised families, created culture, and pushed America toward its highest ideals, often while fighting for our own recognition and rights.
Today, we honor our ancestors who paved the way and celebrate the continued legacy that shapes America's future. Our contributions are not footnotes in history—they ARE American history.
