In the mid-twentieth century, the US Capitol was renovated, prompting the replacement of hundreds of sandstone and marble blocks, most original to the building. Because the stones were government property, the contractor couldn’t legally sell or dispose of them, so workers piled them on the outskirts of a maintenance yard in Rock Creek Park and forgot about them. Now they’re covered in moss in the trees, an unofficial part of history.
