"The UN now predicts that the global population will rise by around 2 billion, to peak at 10.3 billion in the 2080s β sooner than expected a decade ago. That may not have much impact in easing global heating, but it could help reduce competition for resources."
Good to see this reasonable take by The Guardian about the global fall in fertility rates.

Habitat loss from agricultural expansion is a leading cause of biodiversity loss. A new study published in PNAS found that accelerated economic development in low-income countries, largely through its dampening effect on population growth, would shrink future global cropland requirements more than slashing consumption in higher-income countries.

"Contrary to conventional wisdom, rapid population growth rarely delivers demographic dividends, while low fertility rates do not necessarily lead to stagnation. In fact, persistently high fertility often exacerbates underemployment, limits investment in education and infrastructure, and entrenches poverty across generations." Adair Turner

"Five hundred years ago, there were only half a billion people. By 1800, 1 billion. When I came along, 2 billion. By 1984, a billion. And now, 8 billion of us.
And Earth is only so big. It looks like success, and we celebrate our success.
But we haven't really accounted for the cost... we need to think, how many of us can Earth maintain and still keep Earth the paradise that it still is?"
