World Faiths Development Dialogue (WFDD) is a not-for-profit organization working at the intersection of religion and global development.
WFDD has two central objectives: to reinforce, underscore, and publicize the synergies and common purpose of religions and development institutions addressing poverty; and to explore issues on which there is little consensus and where common ground is unclear among different faith traditions, within faiths, and between faiths and development institutions. Leadership roles are never easy, but being a woman leader has its own special obstacles, distortions, and double binds. As a woman leading a college that empowered women, I was especially intent on being thoughtful about how I used the power of the office. The words here were part of my inaugural address at the outset of my presidency in 1993, and I made an effort to live into them over the 14 years. I wasn’t always successful.
So I was right there with America Ferrera during her impassioned speech in the recent movie, Barbie, as she bore witness to the ongoing barrage of impossible social expectations on women.
