On Monday, Jan. 16, we celebrate and honor the legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose adoption of nonviolent resistance to achieve equal rights for Black Americans earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.
During his speech at the March on Washington on August 28, 1963, Dr. King said, "In a sense we've come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men – yes, black men as well as white men – would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.… America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked 'insufficient funds.'"

ICYMI: Effective October 1, the DC "Non Compete Clarification Amendment Act of 2022 undid many of the bans on non competition provisions set forth in the prior DC "Ban on Non-Compete Agreements Amendments Act of 2020". These changes provide more flexibility for employers who seek to impose restrictive covenants on DC employees, but only if they follow certain parameters on scope, notice, salary level and profession.

Extensio Law is excited to announce the opening of our new office at 275 West Street in Annapolis, Maryland! Opening this office allows us to work more closely with our Maryland clients. Thank you to the Extensio Law community for your support - you make this expansion possible.
FUN FACT: Annapolis, the capital of Maryland, is designed and was constructed under a baroque plan, similar to the capitals of Europe. Circles with radiating streets create focal points and give importance to certain structures, including the State House. This urban design was admired by frequent visitor George Washington, who later had Pierre L'Enfant incorporate it into the nation's capital.

For over 20 years, these awards have celebrated the dedicated women of the DC metro area who not only engage in robust professional careers but also epitomize exceptional commitment to volunteerism and community service.
In addition to the pioneering work she does as the Managing Member of Extensio Law, Misti has led many non-profit Boards throughout her career. She is a current leader on the Boards of Trustees of Luminis Health, Anne Arundel Medical Center and The Madeira School.

"Labor gives birth to ideas." Jim Rohn
Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. Observed the first Monday in September, the holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being. We are privileged to work every day in the field of HR, supporting brilliant humans who bring those ideas to life.

As we head into the Labor Day weekend, here's a fun fact: the US Department of Labor was the first Cabinet agency led by a woman -- Frances Perkins in 1933. As Secretary of Labor, Perkins took on the responsibility of developing solutions to the problems being caused by the Great Depression. Most pressing was the fact that between 13 and 18 million Americans were unemployed.
Six women have held the title of Secretary of Labor since Frances Perkins, giving the Labor Department the record for the most women Secretaries. Many of the women who followed in Perkins’ footsteps have blazed their own trails. Elaine Chao and Hilda Solis were the first Asian American and Latinas in the Cabinet, respectively. Alexis Herman was the first African American to serve as Secretary of Labor. And Elizabeth Dole was the first woman to lead two different Departments (Labor and Transportation), in two different administrations.
