Trauma can lock us into 'stuck points,' where our thoughts and emotions are caught in a negative loop that can make it harder to move forward after trauma.

These slides explore some of the major themes of trauma-related stuck points and provide some examples of the ways that trauma can impact how we think about ourselves, others, and the world that we live in.

While trauma-informed care sets the stage for a supportive environment, trauma treatment dives deep into personal healing.

Some examples of trauma-specific approaches include:

Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT): A type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that helps patients learn how to challenge and modify beliefs related to the trauma that can keep them stuck.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE): Gradually builds exposure to trauma-related reminders in order to learn health coping strategies, challenge problematic thoughts, and reduce avoidance.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Focuses on processing distressing trauma-related memories, thoughts, and feelings through guided eye movements to reduce the vividness and emotion associated with these memories.

TREC DC offers these approaches and more to help you work through your trauma. Understanding the options can empower you to seek the right help and support for your recovery.

We often think of trauma as a “traumatic event” like a car accident or a natural disaster. While those things can, of course, be traumatic, trauma isn't always about the big, shocking events. It can stem from ongoing, subtle pressures that impact our well-being over time.

By understanding the broad scope of what can be traumatic, we open the door to more empathy and better support for everyone around us, including ourselves.

Swipe through to explore the different facets of trauma. Let’s learn, support, and heal together.
