Walking my dog this morning in Washington, DC, it was already hot before most people had finished their first cup of coffee.

Days like this always make me think about the electric grid.

As temperatures rise, millions of air conditioners switch on across the region, creating enormous demand for electricity. At the same time, we're adding electric vehicles, heat pumps, and other technologies that are increasing our reliance on the grid.

Historically, the solution has been straightforward: build more power plants and more transmission lines.

But what if part of the solution is already sitting in neighborhoods across the country?

That's the idea behind Virtual Power Plants (VPPs).

A Virtual Power Plant connects thousands of distributed energy resources, including solar systems, batteries, and even electric vehicles, and coordinates them to act like a single power plant.

Instead of relying entirely on centralized generation, utilities can leverage energy resources that already exist in homes and businesses.

What's particularly exciting is that homeowners with battery storage may eventually be able to participate in programs that help support the grid during periods of peak demand, potentially earning incentives while improving grid reliability.

Here in the DC region, utilities, regulators, and industry stakeholders have been exploring these concepts for years. What once sounded futuristic is starting to look much more practical.

At a time when many homeowners are seeing higher electric bills and utilities are facing growing demand, Virtual Power Plants could become an important part of the solution.

The rooftop solar systems and batteries being installed today may become the foundation of tomorrow's electric grid.

What do you think? Would you participate in a program that allowed your battery to help support the grid in exchange for incentives or bill credits?

Buying a Home With a Solar PPA? Here's What You Need to Know | Uprise Solar 06/18/2026

Thinking about buying a home with solar panels?

Don't let a solar Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) scare you away from the house you love.

One of the most common questions we hear is, "What happens to the solar agreement when the home is sold?"

The answer is usually much simpler than people expect. In most cases, the agreement transfers to the new homeowner as part of the normal home sale process. At Uprise Solar, it's typically handled with a simple one-page document, and we're happy to help buyers, sellers, and realtors through the process.

If you've found your dream home and it happens to have solar, that's often a benefit, not a burden.

One of the biggest things that confuses homeowners researching solar is how often the industry throws around the word “credit.”

Tax credits. Net metering credits. SRECs. Utility credits.

The problem is they’re all completely different things, and a lot of people understandably end up confused.

We just published a new guide breaking down:
☀️ What the federal solar tax credit actually was
☀️ How net metering works
☀️ What SRECs really are
☀️ Why DC solar works differently than many other states
☀️ How these programs affect your electric bill

No hype. No jargon. Just a straightforward explanation written for real homeowners in DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Park View is getting a little facelift. ☀️

Another DC rowhouse is on its way to producing its own clean energy while lowering electric bills for decades to come.

One more roof putting the DC solar incentives to work instead of sending those dollars to the utility company.

Looking good, Park View.

What Does an Electric Bill Look Like After Going Solar? | Uprise Solar 06/04/2026

“What will my electric bill actually look like after going solar?”

It’s one of the most common questions we hear from homeowners.

So one of our customers shared their real utility bill with us after having solar installed for over a year, and we broke it down section by section to explain what everything actually means.

The article covers:
☀️ How net metering works
☀️ Why you still receive a utility bill after solar
☀️ What solar credits look like
☀️ Why some homeowners still see small utility charges
☀️ How solar offsets electricity usage over time

The example uses a Pepco bill from DC, but the same concepts apply to homeowners throughout Maryland and Virginia too, including Dominion Energy and BGE customers.

We tried to make this as clear and educational as possible because understanding your bill should not feel confusing.

Free Solar Ending in DC: What You Need to Know | Uprise Solar 05/21/2026

A lot of people in DC still think “free solar” sounds fake.

Honestly, we get it.

But the reality is that DC’s solar incentives have allowed thousands of homeowners to go solar with little to no upfront cost through programs that lower their monthly electric bills instead of adding another payment.

The problem is that this may be the final year these true $0 solar programs exist the way they do today.

Changes to the federal tax credits that help fund these projects are likely coming, which means DC will probably start looking more like Maryland and the rest of the country where solar still makes sense, but usually comes with higher PPA rates or traditional financing.

Meanwhile Pepco rates have jumped dramatically over the last year and summer electric bills are about to hit hard.

That’s why you’re suddenly seeing so much solar around DC right now. People are trying to lock this in before the incentives change.

If you’ve been curious about solar, now is probably the time to at least see your options while the current programs still exist.

And if you already have solar and love it, tell your friends. Seriously. A lot of people still have no idea these programs are real.

Free Solar Ending in DC: What You Need to Know | Uprise Solar Free solar in Washington, DC may be ending soon as federal business tax credits change. Learn why $0 PPA solar programs could disappear, what it means for homeowners and businesses, and why now may be the best time to lock in lower energy costs before incentives change.

DC homeowners are about to feel the real impact of rising electricity rates this summer.

A $180 summer power bill from last year could easily be $250+ now, even with the same usage. Since around 2020, total electricity costs in DC have roughly doubled for many families when you combine supply and delivery charges.

The problem is that rate increases are easy to ignore in the spring. Then the heat hits, the AC turns on, and suddenly the bill shock feels very real.

That’s one big reason more homeowners are looking into solar now. Many of our customers already protected themselves from a large portion of these increases by locking in a lower, more predictable energy cost.

And honestly, the window for no-cost solar in DC may not stay this strong forever.

We wrote a breakdown explaining what’s happening, why bills are climbing, and what homeowners are starting to do about it.

We were fortunate enough to be on Good Morning Washington talking about something that’s not getting enough attention.

Electric rates in DC keep going up. Pepco raises rates, the Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia approves it, and homeowners are left with higher bills.

So what can you actually do about it?

One option is DC’s no-cost solar programs, often called “free solar.” For a lot of homeowners, it’s a way to lower your bill without paying upfront and stop being fully exposed to utility rate increases.

That’s what we walked through in this segment.

If you’ve been seeing your bill climb and wondering what your options are, this is worth a watch.

Most people don’t think about their roof until there’s a problem.

It’s usually something like, “ahh… there’s a leak, now I have to deal with this.”

But if you’re thinking about going solar, your roof suddenly matters a lot more.

Solar systems last 25+ years. If your roof doesn’t, you could end up paying thousands to remove and reinstall everything later.

We put together a simple guide for DC homeowners:

How long your roof should last before going solar
When you should replace it first
What happens if you wait too long

A lot of people in DC are asking the same question right now:

Why does my electric bill keep going up?

You’ll hear explanations about demand, infrastructure, even data centers.

Those things matter.

But here’s the part most people don’t realize:

Rates don’t go up unless they’re approved.

The Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia is the group that approves rate increases for Pepco.

And over the past few years, those increases have added up.

At some point, it’s fair to ask:
Are these decisions really being made with residents in mind?

A lot of people feel like they’re not.

If your bill has gone up even though your usage hasn’t, you’re not imagining it.

That’s the impact of rate decisions behind the scenes.

The good news is, you’re not powerless here.

You can:
• Submit a public comment to the PSC
• Listen in on rate case hearings
• Contact your DC Councilmember
• Get involved locally

And if you’re trying to figure out how to protect yourself from rising costs, there are options worth exploring.

Happy to talk through it if you’re curious.
