Nearly half of women with a recent live birth reported not taking a multivitamin, prenatal vitamin, or folic acid before pregnancy, according to a new CDC study. The research also found that women with prepregnancy diabetes, a known risk factor for birth defects, were not more likely to take folic acid before pregnancy, highlighting a critical opportunity for prevention.
These findings reinforce the importance of preconception counseling, folic acid supplementation, and addressing modifiable risk factors before pregnancy.
